Room 112 Happenings

Recap of Week 4

Monday, September 12 - Friday, September 16, 2022

Release Date: Sunday, September 18, 2022

Greetings Room 112 Families!

My apologies for the delayed Newsletter this week!! There has been a "bug" floating around and it finally caught up with me. This weekend was spent rejuvenating to get prepared for the week, so I appreciate your patience with the delayed weekly update.

During Week 4, Room 112 showcased Peter H. Reynolds & celebrated International Dot Day on Thursday, September 15th. iPads & chargers were sent home with your child on Friday. For the time being, I ask that iPads be returned to school after every weekend, fully charged. Your child can leave their iPad charger at home. iPads will be sent home over the weekends, for now. Your child is welcome to explore the iPad & apps when they come home, at your discretion of course!! Occasionally I will assign optional work on SeeSaw. I do encourage your child to familiarize themselves with the iPad like how to plug in their headphones, turn the iPad on & off, return to the home screen, log into Clever, etc. During our stations on Wednesday, your child worked on the app Lexia. More information about Lexia will come home this week, but if time allows I recommend they try to complete 10 - 20 minutes of Lexia outside of the classroom when iPads come home.

Below you will find a more detailed look from Week 4 & a sneak peek of Week 5. We are excited to celebrate Apple Week & have our Apple Exploration Day on Friday, September 23rd.

Have a WONDERFUL rest of your weekend!!

Ms. Clark

Recap of Week 4

 RUOS

Reading Workshop

This week in Reading Workshop we continued to explore the differences between fiction & nonfiction books. We discussed reading a book from cover to cover and rereading a book to learn more.

 PUOS

Phonics

During Week 4 in Phonics we focused on letters:

M - S - T - N - A

We continued to study each others names & learn new names so we can learn more letters. We also discussed how syllables can help readers & writers tackle long words. We practiced by counting the syllables in our classmates names. The kids made comparisons between names that started with the same letter & we've been discussing how vowels are special letters.

Ask you child why vowels are special & to name the 5 vowels we discuss in class.

Next week we will cover letters:

Monday - R (Riley)

Tuesday - L (Leo)

Wednesday - D

Thursday - F

Friday - Review - Apple Day

WUOS

Writing Workshop

The kids started their first Writing Workshop this week by writing about a Show n Tell item they were wearing. Students that are beginning to read & write were encouraged to make a detailed picture with beginning sound labels. Students that are reading & writing were encouraged to challenge themselves by labeling 3 parts of their drawing & writing a complete sentence to go along with their item.

Ask your child what item they wrote about.

Math

In Math we continue to focus on numbers 0 - 9, counting to 100 by 1's & 10's and this week your child learned about Tally Marks. We read the book "Tally O'Malley" and practiced counting & writing our own tally marks.

Have your child count objects around the house & use tally marks to keep track.

Second Step

During Week 4 of Second Step we discussed Following Directions. During Week 5 we will talk about using self-talk to stay on task.

On Friday morning (9/23/22), we will have a special guest, our school psychologist, Dr. Perez. She is going to teach us about the Zones of Regulation.

Science

This week in Science your child learned about trees. We discussed how there are two types of trees; deciduous (hardwood) & coniferous (softwood). We talked about the parts of the tree & on Friday your child adopted a tree that they will watch & observe for the rest of the school year.

During Week 5 we will explore the life cycle of an apple tree.

Week 4 Focus

Peter Reynolds & International Dot Day

During Week 4 we read several books by Peter H. Reynolds & learned a little bit about him. On Thursday, September 15th we celebrated International Dot Day by reading Reynold's book "The Dot" and expanding on our discussion about growth mindset & discussed making our own mark on this world.

Great Books From the Week to Discuss with Your Child at Home ...

Our Shared Reading this week was "Mrs. Wishy Washy". Your child came home with an emergent reader, earlier in the week, related to the book.

By the end of the week most of the kids were able to read along with the book & retell the story on their own.

We read three versions of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" this past week and then practiced retelling the story to our classmates.

We compared & contrasted the many different versions we read & watched. (We were able to watch a few short animated versions too.)

On Friday, your child created puppet characters and practiced retelling their version of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff".

Please let me know if your child retold the story to you at home using the puppet characters! They can earn a little WOW Slip if they did!!

After reading & discussing these books the kids were able to identify the character, setting, problem & solution of the story.

Skills Your Child Can Work On At Home.

Below is a suggested list of things your child can be working on at home. Send in the work, take a picture and/ or email me about your child going above & beyond at home.Your child will earn a WoW Slip at school for their time and effort outside of the classroom.

  1. Rainbow write classmate's names.

CHALLENGE: Rainbow write classmate's names, on their own, without copying them.

  2. Count out the syllables in classmate's names.

CHALLENGE: Find things around that house that are 3 - 5 syllables long.

  3. Read a book with your child and have them identify the problem & solution.

CHALLENGE: Challenge your child to come up with alternative solutions to the story.
