PORTREEVE'S POST

Following a busy Jubilee, Karen and I have enjoyed a moment of respite before things started getting busy again.  With the Ale Tasting and Bread Weighing ceremony just round the corner, it's time for a recap and a look forward to what's coming up!

So, here is a rundown of the highlights, there's more online at www.ashburtonportreeve.info!

NEWS

This year we marked another important event in Ashburton's history with the Centenary of the Ashburton RBL branch.  The day started with a memorial service followed by a celebratory BBQ and the unveiling of a memorial arch and garden at the Legion Hut.

The Bailiff's Byngo & Game Show, was a fantastic evening of typical Byng madness which had everyone laughing and singing along to the music bingo rounds.  Our game-show panelists were fantastic and the audience particularly enjoyed their performance of "YMCA"!  Thank you to everyone that came along to enjoy the show or to help out on the evening!

The aim of the game show was to raise money for a Sensory Room at Woodlanders.  Thankfully, early ticket sales meant that we were able to progress with the project and so much of the £830 raised will go towards other causes including a new public defibrillator at the top of the town.

We also commissioned a  brass plaque for the Legion Hut commemorating the Jubilee & RBL Centenary memorial arch and garden, and I've been supporting the Legion Hut with installing a mobile broadband router so there is now WiFi available!

OLDS

I was recently given a copy of the "Gamble Report" which was presented to the Courts in October 1988.  The report is fascinating summarisation of information relating to the Courts which provides a lot of background information about the legal status of the Courts as well as answers to lots of common questions such as:

what is a "presentment";

who can be Portreeve or Bailiff;

who can be a Juror;

who is the Lord of the Borough;

and who receives royal visitors?

You can read the full text of the Gamble Report and see scans of the original documents on the website...

DIARY

The month started with a packed long weekend of Jubilee Celebrations which kept Karen and I very busy.  Whilst we then had a short respite, the Queen's official Birthday was celebrated on Saturday 11th with the union flag raised over St Lawrence Chapel.  The annual Parish Meeting tool place on the 22nd with presentations from Teignbridge district Council on recycling, from Nigel Ward on the development of the Chamber of Trade and from Suzy Williamson on the activities of the Moorland Community Care team.  In preparation for Ale Tasting Ceremony this month we visited all the inns in the town to make sure that new landlords are aware of the event and are taking part.  The sun shone on the Centenary of the Ashburton RBL branch which made for a fantastic celebration and then it was time to focus on preparations for Bailiff's Byngo - finally!

CALENDAR

It's that time of year when Ale Tasting and Bread Weighing looms near and we dig out our mediaeval costumes to see if they still fit!  We have a number of new establishments in the town this year and we are looking forward to them joining in with this important tradition.

FUNDRAISING

We're currently focusing our efforts on raising funds to install a public defibrillator at the top of the town.  We are also hoping that if we hit target we can get match funding for another defibrillator at the other end of town!  As part of this effort we have a number of sought after Ashburton Jubilee Coin Packs to give away for donations of £5 or over.  Read on for more information...
