Building from Strength to Strength An Interview with outgoing Colorado ASTA President, Alison Mayes By Philip Ficsor December, 2019 On a snowy, late November evening, I spent an hour or so chatting with Alison Mayes, Colorado ASTA’s fearless leader for the past several years. Her thoughtful responses and cheerful demeanor reinforced the sense that as President, Alison has been a force for good in creating an ASTA chapter here in Colorado that is thriving. However, many of you may not know the details of her background, so here’s a retelling of the conversation we had. |

ASTA Elizabeth A. H. Green School Educator Award Winner... Please congratulate Alison Mayes on winning the 2020 ASTA Elizabeth A. H. Green School Educator Award! This recognition is awarded to an educator with a "current and distinguished career in a school orchestra setting". Alison embodies that description: "Alison was hired into her position at Parker Performing Arts to begin the string program. Her experience and expertise as a string specialist made her the perfect fit for an arts-centered school. After establishing the middle level orchestra at PPA, she founded the 3rd and 4th grade elementary program, fulfilling the community’s wishes for even more robust instrumental music opportunities. Alison’s leadership as the department chair helped serve her school through continued efforts to maintain and grow the string program. Alison serves our greater string community through her work with the Longmont Youth Symphony Strings Ensemble as an instructor. She continues her teaching service in her local community of Parker through the Colorado Chamber Orchestra Elementary Instrumental Music Program at two area elementary schools. The state of Colorado values leadership in our musicians. Alison has sponsored and led Tri-M Honor Society chapters at her current and past schools helping to facilitate musical and general citizenship in our youth to help them lead our society into a more fulfilling future. The Colorado ASTA chapter is thrilled and lucky to have Alison lead as our chapter president. Her leadership and guidance helped Colorado earn national recognition in our state’s growth in ASTA membership. She has also led our state as the Colorado High School All State Orchestra Chair, Conducting Class Instructor in Boulder, Colorado, and as the founder and director of the Middle and High School Camp Con Brio String Camp of the Rockies in Divide, Colorado since 2001." Way to go, Alison! We are proud of your leadership and friendship! Colorado ASTA has lots to be proud of! Learn more about the other 2020 national ASTA award winners. |
