I have been so inspired by the leaders I have been mentoring.  In my new book on Performance Leadership, I talk about a key in the energy of Performance Leadership.

 

I am in the business of better high performance.  Often the ‘better’ is camouflaged within the leaders and waiting for release!

 

First, your leadership is not your boss!  It is you. You know a good leader when you are around them.  It is almost as if their energy is speaking.  And it is!

 

This means you have observed the profound impact of 'Mana'. Rooted in Polynesian tradition, Mana is the spiritual essence—a leader's signature energy—that shapes their influence and inspires long after they've left a room.

 

Mana is more than charisma; it is a leader's core—values, integrity, and spirit. This powerful energy speaks volumes, setting a tone that words alone cannot convey.

 

It enters the room before you do, and leaves well after you, like the ripples in a pond.  Performance Leaders all have powerful Mana.

 

From my experiences working with senior leaders, I've seen the release of this phenomenon in action. Leaders who channel their Mana carry a resonant energy that can shift teams, organisations, families, and performance.

 

Mana is in everyone, but for many, it is camouflaged in busy, rush, react and solve.  We are not robots, this is a fully human game we are in, and sometimes leaders need help to allow their Mana to breathe and move.

 

When there is space, and when a leader's Mana is made visible to them, a new relationship starts to form within themselves, and it influences, empowers and transforms those around them.  You will recognise this in yourself and in some of the stand-out leaders around you.

 

High Performance is communication and it is a ‘creating leaders’ game. The most impactful leaders radiate an inner force that guides their leadership and decision-making. Their silent power.

 

To embody Mana in leadership is to be intentional about the energy you emit. It’s about the legacy you create, not just the actions you perform. Your people may not recall your words or actions as much as the essence of your presence—the emotional and spiritual impact—that is what contributes to transformation and performance legacy.

  1. Mana Awareness: Set aside time daily for a week to sit quietly, free from distractions. Reflect on the core elements that makes up your Mana—your values, integrity, and spirit.

     

  2. Visualise your energy entering the room before you and the impact it leaves after you depart.

     

  3. Reflection on Influence: After each significant interaction or decision, ask yourself, "Did my values and integrity guide my behaviour, and could I sense my 'Mana' influencing the outcome?"
