Crying in Chicago, Kugels & Komedians, and a new year. |
Hi! I missed everyone last week! In today's newsletter, I tell the story of how I missed my own comedy show two weeks ago because I got stuck in Chicago for work (yes, I have a full-time job!), got a black eye, and cried the whole way home. Don't worry, I'll be at our next show Kugels and Komedians show on 10/19. I'm putting the tears and drama behind me because it's a new Jewish year (Shana Tova)! I celebrated Rosh Hashanah with my family in Montreal, and I think the year is off to a happy and healthy start. Enjoy ❤️🍯🍎 If you're new here, hi! I'm Danielle, a marketer, writer, and artist doodling about her life (@danielleindoodles) and Jewish things (@jewsindoodles). This newsletter, sent most Sundays (and sometimes not on Sundays), has new cartoons and updates on what I'm working on in both worlds. I love producing this newsletter and appreciate you following! |

Crying my way through Chicago |
Earlier this year, I shared my journey of travel mishaps in a newsletter, and people enjoyed it. Here we go again! This time it was a work trip. I am a content producer at a news publisher, meaning I had to oversee a shoot for a branded video at a hair salon in Chicago last week. |

Flight cancelation and a stop in Milwaukee |
I was supposed to get to Chicago Sunday morning, meet up with a friend for brunch, then go on a boat tour. None of this happened because my flight got canceled on Saturday night. |
It was impossible to find a flight to Chicago, so I flew to MILWAUKEE, took a little shuttle through a parking lot, and ended up on an Amtrak to Chicago! This worked well — shoutout to my friend Kara who came up with this genius solution. |
Then, I got stuck there an extra day |
I found out the film crew's flight was canceled, so we had to push the shoot to Tuesday, meaning I'd miss my own comedy show which was that night (I thought there was a chance I could make it/I was in denial...) This is when the crying beings... |

I got a black eye and cried again in front of confused office workers |
On Monday, my coworker and I didn't have a shoot, so we worked in a coworking space. I was cold, I was sad, I was hungry, it was raining, and I was on hold with American Airlines for way too long. It seemed like there was nowhere to get food, but then we saw a cafe in the lobby of the building ... which closed 5 minutes before we got there. I pivoted, angry walked away, right into the glass enclosure of the revolving door. I thought it was open!! Cut to me sobbing in the echo-y lobby of this soulless building, |

Friends help you feel better! |
I met up with comedian Josh Cahn, who performed at the Chosen Fest and lives in Chicago. We met when I was working at the festival. He took me to the only good meal I had in Chicago — an Israeli place, of course — and I discovered Jeni's ice cream has a retail location and is delicious! Hint: you may be seeing Josh again if you come to my next show ... (we are still confirming if it's possible) |

The shoot and the show went great! |
Despite all of this drama, we had a great shoot, and the makeup artist even covered my eye! Plus, the show went really well. I handled as much as possible virtually. My cohost Robin did an awesome job hosting on her own and handling everything without me. My sister, who was in town, stepped up, too! She did an intro for me and sold my products after the show (better than I could!) |

Work gave me a warm welcome back |
Look at that, I still got a chance to be on "stage," but at work. The first video in the series featuring a cool sustiable store called Earth & Me in NYC launched last Friday (see here). I got to present about the campaign to my coworkers in person last week. Even though I do comedy, this public speaking opportunity made me SO nervous. It went well, though! |

Kugels and Komedians Show 10-19 |
To re-establish my presence after missing the last show 😂, this one's theme is centered around my upcoming birthday! We have a great lineup and some fun surprises. People love the new venue, which serves good food and drinks for reasonable prices. A new kugel drop and my products will be available for sale. Discount code is KUGEL5. | | |

Shop for the calendar journal (coming in next week, so if you ordered one, thank you for your patience!), the very popular calendar magnets, and mitzvah or Shandah here. And check out the latest Mitzvah or Shandah video with comedian Zoe Rosenberger. More to come. And remember I have a list of high holiday resources here if you still need it. |

A very happy new year with my family |
After Chicago, I had a day to repack and head to Montreal, where I spent the holiday with family. No travel mishaps here. We had a lovely time! I'm going into the new Jewish year with a sense of calm and peace. I hope that lasts! |

If you're observing Yom Kippur, I'm wishing you a meaningful fast. Next weekend, I'm going back to Trybal Gatherings next weekend in SoCal with my sister! Then, I'm heading straight to Atlanta for another video shoot! I'll be in touch here or on social media. Thanks for reading! 👋 Doodles, Danielle |
