One of my favorite Christmas albums of all time is Amy Grant's "Home for Christmas." While I love all of the songs on it, my "go-to's" are her renditions of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," and "My Grown-Up Christmas List." The CD came out in 1992, before my last semester of med school, but I didn't pick it up until I was a PGY-3. I remember singing along to "My Grown-Up Christmas List" over and over in my residency-era apartment while trimming and dancing around my threadbare tree. The poignancy and insight of that song struck the late 20-something me, on the cusp between young adult and adult. At that time, I was still excited about "things," since I was yet to get to where I was going, but my understanding of the bigger, more important "Things" was burgeoning and blooming into my own grown-up Christmas list. Now that I'm a mid-50-something, the only Things that matter to me anymore are the invisible ones that manifest in gracious ways: peace, kindness, and love. I hope your grown-up holiday list is full of wonderful things that fill your life with comfort, joy, and meaning. Reply to this email with what's on YOUR list this year. Maybe it's decorations from Tiffany's...or recognition for an accomplishment... or healing for a loved one. All wishes are worthy. I'd love to hear from you. |

Tip of the Month The media may approach you for an interview on a medical study. There are eight types of studies you might be asked about: Therapy Screening Causation Diagnosis Economic analysis Prognosis Quality of Care Review
In the coming months, I will go over questions you should ask yourself as you review the article ahead of your interview. ~~~ Let's say you've been asked to comment on a journal article regarding prognosis. How would you prepare?
As you review the article, ask yourself these questions: Was there a group of individuals at an early and uniform point in the course of illness? Could baseline features be measured in a reproducible way? Were the outcomes reproducibly measured and clinically important? Was there at least an 80% follow up of the study participants?
Next month, I’ll go over questions to ask yourself when preparing for an interview on a quality of care article. Stay tuned! |

Ask Me Anything This month's question comes from Dr. N.S.: "Do I really need to take all five minutes for my introduction in a presentation?" Yes! The first five minutes of your presentation are crucial! This is when you build a connection with your audience. In these five minutes, you need to answer: 1) What is the topic? 2) Why are YOU the one to be giving this talk? Reciting your CV might go to your expertise, but it doesn't do much to build rapport. Instead tell a story that explains to the audience what's in it for them. Maybe you can discuss a case that taught you something, or made you recognize an unmet care need, or revved up your passion for what you do. Tie it in to how it can help those in the audience do what they need to do more effectively. Show that you care and your audience will care along with you, and they will look forward to what you have to say in the informational portion of your presentation. Thanks for your question, Dr. N.S.! ~~~ For more information about my presentation coaching, click here! | | |
