oh where,

oh where have my little starts gone?

to good homes and dinner tables, that's where!

Starters! You sowed, tended and poured both water and love on your vegetable start kits, then entrusted getstarted to find good homes for your wards. As you know, in May and early June, we shared those starts with appreciative families and individuals at seven Petaluma and Santa Rosa food pantries, and since then, we’ve circled back to see how the “Growers” and their plants have been doing. We now have some happy updates to share!

“Everything’s thriving! I’ve already had cucumbers and beans. The tomatoes are still green, but they’re there. I love to go out and look at it all. It really inspired me to get going on an edible garden and made me wonder, why am I not doing this more?”—Ella T

“My wife planted them all. It brought us out of the house and into the backyard. It seems like life is coming back to our house! We go out everyday, we’ve added to it—it’s wonderful.”—M.C.

"I visit them everyday and I’m hoping they become superplants and will be super to eat! I’ll have to get bigger bread so I can make nice, big sandwiches. This was the first time I grew vegetable plants. I’m trying to grow other things now.”—Linda C.

Sadly, Seth’s plants didn’t fare as well due to his family’s month-long trip to Africa to visit friends and family, but he promises to take better care in the future and has already decided he’ll be growing tomatoes. : )

These accounts, and so many more, warmed our hearts and we hope warm yours now, too.

Thank you Starters, volunteers, Petaluma Bounty, the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma and our product sponsors Petaluma Seedbank, Swallowtail Garden Seeds, Grab N’ Grow and Friedman’s for all of your generous, big-hearted and enthusiastic help in making the spring 2021 program such a terrific success!

speaking of big-hearted…

Thanks, Starters, for answering our survey, and we thought you might relate to how some fellow Starters responded to: What motivated you to participate?

"Such an awesome way to support a family—providing a source of food that keeps giving!"

"I was happy to have a way of helping neighbors I didn’t yet know, to know how to grow their own vegetables."

"I’ve been sharing my own starts with neighbors the past couple of years. It was joyful to expand my activity."

"Love gardening, thought the program was an important way to get healthy food to people in need and perhaps start a cycle of growing their own food."

"Feel good project!"

Great to see 80% of you would absolutely participate again, with 20% saying possibly, depending on timing, and 0% declining! You liked staying connected via the “supportive, informative, cheerful and motivating” e-comms; especially liked the “visual learning” provided via the instructional videos; 61% of you identified as Mid-Level gardeners/23% Amateur/16% Expert; and 61% of you had previous experience volunteering with food insecurity causes. Nice!

Congratulations to Starter Lisa Manterfield who won a copy of UC’s California Master Gardener Handbook!
