WELCOME! Welcome to Mobilize Frederick’s biweekly newsletter from CEMWG, the Climate Emergency Mobilization Work Group! Did you know that Frederick City and Frederick County are the 91st and 99th jurisdictions in the United States to adopt a Climate Emergency Resolution in 2020? And that over 1,814 governments in 30 countries (that’s over 830,000,000 people!) have already joined the movement to find equitable solutions to reduce Green House Gases (GHG) and halt global warming at 2.7F? Together, we can do this! We’re mobilizing Frederick! Every other week you may hear about timely actions to reduce your carbon footprint, or about interesting findings of the CEMWG’s talented members. We are fortunate that more than 50 experts have volunteered to research solutions for their overall effectiveness, equitable and just consideration of all residents, and relevance to Frederick. You may also read about a program or a person in Frederick County that is already taking bold climate action! Please answer our survey or go to our website and tell us about your ideas. Who planted 1000 trees? Who won the Green Homes Challenge? Who subscribed to community solar? Maybe you or your business will be featured! For more information or to share your ideas and comments, go to MobilizeFrederick.org Thank you for supporting the Climate Emergency Mobilization Work Group! The Mobilize Frederick Team |

Talk to us! Mobilize Frederick (the Climate Emergency Mobilization Workgroup) is working to create a more sustainable environment for Frederick, MD. To be successful, we need to hear from you! Please share your opinions, experiences, suggestions, comments, and questions. We have an online forum at MobilizeFrederick.org (under “We hear you”), where you can add any comments and ideas. We’re also going to send out surveys to households, businesses, educators, and frontline communities to see how you feel about climate change and what solutions you may already have in place. We may also hold town halls (possibly virtually) to seek your input. While individual views on climate change vary, we focus equally on every single resident’s wellbeing - be it financial security, health, family, friends, and access to clean, natural resources. And we want to hear from everyone! The environment is suffering and we need to work together as a community to reverse the damage that has already been done, as well as prevent further damage from occurring. Mobilizers within all communities will be vital to get us all on the right path for change because climate change impacts everyone. We know that more vulnerable communities, or frontline communities, experience more severe negative outcomes than privileged communities and areas. The Climate Emergency Mobilization Work Group’s efforts are informed by the disproportionate impact these vulnerable communities experience and aim for equitable solutions for all. Mobilize Frederick is also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: Follow us for updates! Our virtual meetings are open to the public: You are welcome to join us on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 5:00 PM. Call 855-925-2801 and enter 8007 when prompted in order to join. We also encourage you to visit our website- MobilizeFrederick.org - and check out our Toolbox to see what you and your family and friends can do right now to start helping and healing the environment! |

A Vegan Thanksgiving On November 26th we will give thanks for our families, for surviving the virus so far, and for the bounty and beauty of the earth. In honor of our children, fellow beings, and all future generations, help us protect the earth with your food choices.*We can use vegan butter in our stuffing, mushroom gravy on our potatoes, and coconut cream in our pumpkin pie. To make the stuffing “meaty”, add lots of nuts and grains, maybe some fruits. If your family can’t skip the traditional turkey, think about how you can minimize the impact on the environment. Here are some amazing facts: - The carbon footprint of a 16-lb. factory-raised turkey is equivalent to driving a car over 180 miles. It creates 34.2 lb. of CO2. But, if you buy from a local farm you can eliminate the CO2 generated by storage, preservatives, and shipping.
- The USDA estimates that 35% of turkey cooked at Thanksgiving gets thrown out, and the emissions from all that turkey in the landfill equal those from 800,000 car trips from New York to San Francisco. So gobble-gobble- eat all your turkey, don’t be wasteful!
- Poultry litter releases methane and nitrous oxide, 72 and 298 times, respectively, more powerful than CO2 in trapping heat in the atmosphere.
So, when you do have a turkey, eat it only for special occasions and eat every bite! And, this November 26th, be safe and enjoy all the stuffing, Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie, and love that you can! *NOTE: Eating a plant-rich diet is widely recommended as a great choice for climate action. And, when you eat meat, be choosey. Meat is grown by local producers using regenerative agricultural practices, which includes grazing animals, are actually rebuilding soil health and restoring ecosystem balance. Local producers are listed in the Amazing Grazing Directory. |
