THE LEARNING CORNER APRIL IS NATIONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY MONTH! ARE YOU LITERATE?? I know, I know: another randomly named "Month" created as a marketing tool, right? In this case, it's not about marketing; it's about educating ourselves in order to enjoy a more satisfying life with less financial stress. Everyone's favorite online expert Wikipedia declares: "National Financial Literacy Month is recognized in the United States in April in an effort to highlight the importance of financial literacy and teach Americans how to establish and maintain healthy financial habits." Let's pose a few questions: |
|
Are you aware of how contributing to a 401(k) or similar plan allows you to reduce your current tax burden? Have you set up a monthly budget, or can you at least track where your money goes?
There's no need to fear money: recognize it as a tool, and use that tool to your advantage. Starting good financial habits early in life will benefit you, and your family, for decades to come. This Monday, I will appear as an "expert" on budgeting in front of a middle-school class as part of an innovative educational program: life skills as learned through project-based learning and direct interviews with professionals. Now, I'm no expert, but I know more than a 13-year-old! In what ways can YOU educate yourself or others on financial matters? |

CRAFT BEER CORNER In case you've been hiding under a rock for the last few weeks, HBO's "Game of Thrones" final season premieres this Sunday, April 14th. What better occasion to try a new brew that this?? Head on over to the Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY and experience their own series of creative beers. (As a matter of fact, they are holding a special GoT feast tomorrow, April 13th.) My ever-thoughtful husband Eddie gifted me with a commemorative four-pack of GoT beers (complete with goblet!) as a Christmas gift. The boxed set comes with four, 12-oz. bottles of evocative specialty beers with names such as "Queen of the Seven Kingdoms," "Hand of the Queen," "Mother of Dragons," and "King of the North." All distinctive but each quite tasty, these brews are available for purchase... just in time for your premiere party! |
