These Books Teach Adding - Like an Abacus
While I don’t use a physical abacus, the same concept of holding tens while adding is used in pencil & paper problems. Adding a problem with slashes enables the student to add single digit numbers (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9). The use of the slash is what makes this algorithm (method) quick and easy. Students are working single digit computations – and have no need to hold or add large numbers mentally or to write out separate equations. Because of this they are less prone to errors or confusion, and more likely to excel at multi digit addition.
Checking your Answers is Included in the books
There is a wonderful and quick way to check your answers without using a calculator. It will sharpen your brain and your math skills at the same time.
The method we use is called “Reducing to a digit.” As the name implies, you will add two of the numbers together. You will continue to add them together (two at a time) until you end up with a single digit. I have many examples and step by step problems with answers in my teachers’ books. This works for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
