Continuing to Lean into a New Future

Dearest Holy Comforter Family,

During the last two weeks, there was all kinds of activity and motion here at the church. The Many Colors Arts Collective will use the 4 classes and hallway closet between our main building and Henderson Hall. We had the cribs and carpets in that area pulled out. We also relocated the ECW treasures and resources to the large closet in McMaster. That entailed all kinds of other

‘sub-projects’ as well. All of this is in preparation for Pete Powers to help with a renovation project to make sure we have space that is welcoming for people with differing abilities and levels of mobility who will be blessed by our new program.

The Many Colors team has also been hard at work preparing Articles of Incorporation, researching grant opportunities, and planning a 4 week

‘soft launch’ of this program from July 10-August 3. We will receive a very small group of Artists-in-Residence—that is, men and women who are cognitively and/or neuro-sensory divergent to the extent that they are not able to function as independent adults. Artist Mentors—members of the arts community here in Montgomery, will spend time with our artists, showing them and helping them work on a variety of art projects. At the end of the 4-week period, we will have a reception and art exhibit where our Artists-in-Residence will have the opportunity to sell their artworks and keep 75% of the proceeds. Many Colors will receive the other 25% of the sales to help with our operational expenses. This ‘soft launch’ will help us refine and finalize our plans for the formal launching of Many Colors as a regular weekday program in the fall.

For the past two months, I have become increasingly aware that we were reaching a critical point, where the work of building up this new ministry and continuing to serve as your rector exceeded the hours in the day and my own capacity to juggle it all and do all my work well. That in turn led to a conversation that has very significant implications for our parish.

At our vestry meeting next week (via Zoom on May 30th), the vestry will receive a recommendation from the Finance Committee and Many Colors Board, to make a withdrawal from the Diocesan Consolidated Trust Account, one of our two ‘endowments.’ These funds will be used to extend a loan to Many Colors so the board can hire a part-time Executive Director.

You may remember that in 2019, Steven Speaks helped us develop a rigorous set of guidelines that would serve as ‘guard rails’ to ensure we make the wisest, most careful decisions possible about the use of the funds in this endowment. We will follow those guidelines carefully: The vestry will take a first vote on this recommendation at our next meeting. Provided that a majority plus one of the vestry approves the motion, we will call a special parish meeting shortly after to give you a detailed report of what our action will entail and then answer your questions and get your feedback. I am going to suggest to the vestry that we take a bit of time at the beginning of our luncheon on June 4th for this purpose. Your vestry and I also hope that between then and our meeting on June 25th, you will feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions or concerns.

One of my most deeply held convictions about serving as your rector is that transparency and clarity are essential to the health of our parish. This is a big step with very real implications for our future, both in terms of risk and reward. Your vestry and I want you to know that we take with utter seriousness our obligation to include you in our deliberations. We will communicate the date of our meeting after next week’s vestry meeting and I hope you will make every effort to participate as we discern the faithful way to lean into a future that includes a thriving Many Colors Arts Collective.

With prayers that the Holy Spirit will ensure we are guided by generosity, courage, and faith in the weeks ahead, I look forward to our conversation!

For differently-abled adults in Montgomery, Many Colors Arts Collective is a place to lose themselves in the joy and exploration of the arts and to find themselves in the loving company of friends and mentors.

Winn Dixie has chosen the Food Pantry as the June recipient of the Bloomin' 4 Good program; for every bouquet sold, we will receive $1.

Thank you, Winn Dixie!
