Camp Friendships

The importance of summer camp is something that is hard to put into words. From the fast bonds and lasting memories, it is a time of joy, exploration, and fun! This year Cobbled Streets partnered with the Cottonwood Institute to put on 2 weeks of camp: Explore Outside!

At our summer camp kids ages 10-14 had the chance to learn, unwind, and most importantly just be kids! Just one story from our amazing time at camp:

On the second week 11-year-old Anna and 14-year-old Dawn connected instantly. On the second day of camp the two referred to one another as best friends - a quick bond often unique to summer camp! Anna arrived that morning with a set of matching necklaces that she had stayed up all night creating for her new friend.

The two built an important and joy filled relationship through the week. Not only did they explore nature - they got involved! Everything from creating campfires, roasting marshmallows, building miniature boats, to hiking and catching fish. The girls shared with one another that they were in foster care and loved the opportunity to connect with other children who understood what their own lives were like. The duo painted a beautiful picture of the importance of summer camp and allowing kids to experience childhood the way it ought to be.

Special Opportunity (Radio Show and DJ)

Imagine your childhood dream coming true, thanks to adults who care. ‘Drake’ is a 12-year-old in foster care who has an affinity for music and a natural talent for disc jockeying. Recently he had a special opportunity to sit in on a radio program and choose all of the music. The host and media icon, who invited Drake to share the program, is a volunteer and friend of Cobbled Streets.

Drake thought the experience was fantastic and hopes he can do it again. The host of the show said he has a great ear for how music lines up when you are playing it over the air and that he enjoyed learning all aspects of the program. She said, “He is welcome back any time!” As Drake was leaving the studio, he stopped, turned around, and gave the host a big hug! 

Making Back to School More Exciting!

 It’s  “Back to School”  and you’re not that excited.  Your clothes are old, you never get to choose your own clothes, and you rarely get new ones. Three teenage girls in foster care knew that feeling too well.  

But this year, Cobbled Streets changed that!  We provided resources for new outfits and new shoes. The girls were able to choose their own clothes, have fun shopping, and explore their individuality. They felt important and special - and they were. In some small way, we let them know they matter.

Colorado Gives Day has grown to be Colorado's largest 24-hour giving event, raising more than $362 million for Colorado since it began in 2010. Each December, Coloradans come together with the common goal to strengthen the community by helping to empower nonprofits. Community First Foundation and FirstBank partner to make this day rewarding for givers, nonprofits and

the community as a whole.
