Two months ago, I was commissioned to write a prayer for tragedy to be included in a siddur/prayer book. Sadly, the editor of the prayerbook who asked me to write the blessing, was on to something. She knew that mass shootings, hostage situations, and acts of terrorism have become a regular part of our world. Asking me to write a prayer for these situations is a sign that these horrific and tragic events have, devastatingly, become part of our new normal.

And she is right. Since she asked me to compose the work, scores of mass shootings have taken place. In fact, as of yesterday, there have been 198 mass shootings in the United States this year. In the past two days alone, a white supremacist fired over 50 rounds killing 10 at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY after posting a vitriolic racist and antisemitic manifesto online, and another entered a gathering following prayer services at the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church. Ordinary people doing ordinary things like trying to feed their families or gather for spiritual uplift, were gunned down. Their lives were senselessly and brutally cut short. And the survivors will live with the trauma of those experiences.

At this point, I fear the Prayer After Acts of Violence page in the prayerbook may become one of those dog-eared well-worn pages because of the frequency of its use.

Sadly, there is no nechemta here. No “consolation” or ending of uplift. Not yet at least. And hopefully, this isn’t the end of the story. Though we sit in the magnitude of the tragedies today, may we find ways to bring a greater sense of care and compassion yet for better tomorrows.

This week of contemplating the aspect of majesty/hod in the cycle of the counting of the Omer, we consider the magnitude of our feelings surrounding these events. The inalterable impressions of horror impressed upon our hearts. The lasting trauma we live with having to say a prayer before entering a worship space or grocery store.

This week at our regular Thursday Healing Circle, we will have space to reflect upon the spiritual impact of these tragic times. Please join us by registering HERE.

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

Rabbi Heather Miller,

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

WITH LOVE AND HEALING

The prayer Rabbi Miller composed with love and healing to the shoppers of the Tops Grocery store in Buffalo, NY, and the parishioners of Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, CA.

Prayer After Acts of Violence

by Rabbi Heather Miller

With love and healing,

Prayers and condolences,

We string another bead on the necklace

of senseless tragedies in our community/nation/world.

Lives lost, wounded souls,

a community forever impacted.

We lift up names, and hands,

to hold space and each other,

in these fraught times after

(name tragedy)

Pain penetrating our hearts,

We find flowers and select stones,

We create makeshift memorials and share stories

of growing grief learning more about loved ones lost.

And mourn.

This tragedy. Together.

Praying for peace to come soon.

May the Maker of Peace cause peace to rain down on us all.

Amen.

TORAH OF THE HEART: MAKING LITURGICAL LOVE TANGIBLE

TODAY! Join us for Torah of the Heart! Our newest teachings by guest Rabbis every other Monday in May and June. May 16, Rabbi Jill Cozen Harel teaches Making Liturgical Love Tangible.

What roles can liturgical texts and rituals play in bringing meaning to our daily lives? How might they encourage deeper connection to God and also reach into doubt and struggles with God? In this program, Rabbi Cozen Harel will share reflections on her experience of the ritual of wearing tefillin and utilizing other physical ritual elements over many years.

Rabbi Jill Cozen-Harel is a San Francisco-based rabbi whose work spans the denominational spectrum. She enjoys running the occasional half-marathon, and gravitates to the fields of education, bioethics, chaplaincy, and healthcare. All are welcome!

ACCESS JUDAISM: REFORM RENOVATIONS OF THE PRAYERBOOK

This is essentially what the Reform Rabbis of the early 19th century did to the prayerbook. Learn how they did it thoughtfully, and about the improtant practice of updating ritual that continues today.

We uplift her loving memory by naming this program in honor of her love of exploring Jewish life through the KITS community programming.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
