What I'm Up To...

So much change has occurred in the past month! I read back through the May Newsletter and it's amazing to see how your life can totally change in a short time frame.

Having so much time at home with my kids, I realized how much my various roles as race director, running store owner, and coach were pulling me away from them. The running store resolved itself as I have left the business to my best friend and former business partner Scott Socha to continue serving the community as Foot Rx. As for races, I've always grappled with putting on events. I love race day and the experience it affords so many runners, but I struggle with many things morally and ethically about putting on the events themselves. I don't believe in making money from races, and could afford not to do so with my previous employment at Foot Rx. Without that job security, it created a struggle for me as anything I do going forward would have to help supplement my income to justify the time spent working on the event. It didn't feel right, so for that reason and the stress and time it does take away from my family, I decided to step away from race directing. Side note - if Hellbender takes place in 2020, it will be the last race I direct (that's not to say that Hellbender won't take place in the future, I just will not be the Race Director).

So where does that leave me? Following my passion of connecting with other runners and helping them realize their potential and reaching their goals while keeping running a joy in their lives as a Coach.

When Scott and I started Foot Rx thirteen years ago, I envisioned sitting on a fitting stool and talking to runners all day and listening to their stories, learning from them, and sharing advice. Little did I know there would be so much behind the scenes that I would spend so little time on the sales floor.

Coaching has given me the opportunity I wanted from the running store on a daily basis. Each day I get to talk to my athletes and communicate with them about their running journey! I feel complete fulfillment that I never received through any other job. I'm happy again. I don't have even an 1/8th of the stress I had just two months ago before we went into Quarantine. My runs are so light and fun. I'm enjoying saying yes to my kids (at any time of day) when they ask me to play.

I still plan to help our community through volunteering at races, performing trail maintenance, and spreading information through my Podcast, YouTube Channel, and this Newsletter.

We've all had to make changes in our lives due to this Pandemic, and some had to make a lot more changes than I did. I certainly consider myself lucky and appreciate everything Foot Rx and Race Directing has given me. I appreciate our community and the support it's given me. We all need to keep moving forward and evolving our roles in society as we see fit. I look forward to today and can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Keep running my friends!

The trails are calling...will you answer?
