As a continuation of our Huaʻōlelo o ka Pule Series during the month of February--Hawaiian Language month--we now feature the Huaʻōlelo o ka Mahina series where we will share one Hawaiian word per month. We hope that you will utilize these terms in your everyday conversations by simply plugging them into your sentences. Before you know it, they will become a natural part of your vocabulary!

PŌMAIKAʻI

Definition: “Good fortune, blessedness, blessing, profit, prosperity; fortunate, blessed, lucky...”

(Pukui & Elbert, “Hawaiian Dictionary”)

Usage example: "I am thankful for the many pōmaikaʻi in my life."

("I am thankful for the many blessings in my life.")

Review from previous weeks:

  • Haʻawina - lesson, assignment, task
  • Kākoʻo - to support, uphold, assist
  • Noke - to persist, continue, repeat, persevere
  • Kuleana - responsibility, right, privilege

Huakaʻi to Aliʻiōlani Hale & ʻIolani Palace

We enjoyed our visit to Aliʻiōlani Hale (the Judiciary History Center) & ʻIolani Palace! At Aliʻiōlani Hale, we were greeted and hosted by their Hawaiian Language Specialist, Ahukini Lenchanko, who took us on an informative and historical tour including a look into the Hawaiʻi State Supreme Court courtroom. Our self-led audio tour of ʻIolani Palace was wonderful as well, and we were pleased to see that ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi was a language option on our headsets! We had a handful of first timers to the Palace in the group, which was special. Enjoy the short video below of our huakaʻi.

Tax Workshop

Mahalo to our very own Poʻi Nā Nalu Peer Mentor, Jenica Lee, for hosting her Tax Workshop on February 26th! It was an informative session, as it helped to answer many questions that typically arise when tax season comes around. Jenica has experience in helping community members with doing their taxes, and so we appreciate and value her knowledge in this area.

KILOHANA

Student of the Month

Amber Lee

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a wife and mother of 5 keiki. Grew up in Kāneʻohe, but a graduate of McKinley High School. I worked full time as a makeup artist for 10 years before coming back to school to earn a degree. I continue to work as a freelance makeup artist while in school. Currently a Cosmetology major.

What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I hope to earn my degree and then go on to earn an instructor's license, then one day come back to teach Cosmetology at HonCC. I also hope to finish my Bachelor's degree in History, too!

How has Poʻi Nā Nalu helped you through your academic journey at HonCC?

Poʻi Nā Nalu has played an integral role in my education. I have received textbooks for many classes through them, and they have also helped me to stay on track. This semester, I was lucky enough to apply for an internship through them to earn money! Mahalo nui loa for all your support!
