Nov. 8, 2022

Greetings -

A lot happening at the East 40 - so let's get to it!

Some dates for your calendar:

  • TOMORROW: Wednesday, Nov. 9: Farm Market on the Quad

  • TOMORROW: Wednesday, Nov. 9: Volunteer Wednesday (last of
    the season)

  • Thursday, Nov. 10: Good Growers club, 11 am-noon (last of the
    season)

The Farm Market at NCC returns tomorrow from 10 am - 2 pm at the main campus Quad. We'll have:

  • product from the East 40 (including garlic and honey)

  • organic produce from Blackbird Farms

  • baked goodies from NCC student clubs

  • coffee to drink (and to buy beans) from Monocacy Coffee Co.

  • locally grown apples from Scholl's Orchards

And as a special treat: beautiful handmade pottery from local artist Bahereh Khodadoosh (below). Consider choosing something for yourself, or as thoughtful gift - or both!

We can accept cash or plastic.

This will be our last market of 2022 - we'll be returning in the spring!

This week is our last for both "Volunteer Wednesdays"(tomorrow, between 4-6 pm) and the Good Growers Club (Thursday from 11 am-noon).

It has been a fabulous fall with a lot of visitors to our space, including many engaged volunteers, energetic Good Growers, our own Food & Identity class, and almost a dozen other classes and groups that have utilized the East 40.

New Kiln Update

We are currently installing a new $15,000 high fire wood and gas kiln, thanks to the generosity of the Weiler Family Foundation.

Over the past few weeks we have made major progress on this exciting project.

Fogel's Fuel Service ran fuel lines for heat, and for the gas kilns. These lines will allow us to work out here throughout the year and to do more reduction fires with our ceramic students.

Then a group of students from NCC's FabLab worked on a frame that sits atop the new kiln.

Below: The new kiln takes shape under the able hands of Andrew Stork, the newest member of NCC's ceramics faculty.

We are looking to complete the new kiln before the end of the month, and will soon have announcements about the next round of for-credit and community ed classes at the East 40. Stay tuned!
