An Academic Achievement:

West Elementary School Receives an "A" Rating

September 2022 - The MS Department of Education has announced the school report cards for the 2021-2022 school year. For the fifth school year in a row West Elementary School located in Sturgis has received the highest rating of any other school in the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD). SOCSD received an over all B rating with West Elementary School being the only school in the district to receive an A rating. (1) This A rating is an increase from the previous school year’s B rating. This is also the first A rating any school in the district has received since West obtained an A rating for the 2017-2018 school year. The following three years West received B ratings. During those years West again was the highest rated school in the district and the only one to receive a B each of those years.

According to the Mississippi Department of Education website the “accountability system assigns "A" through "F" letter grades for schools and districts. Grades are based on student achievement, student growth, student participation in testing, and other academic measures.”

West elementary is home to grades Kindergarten thru 5th grade and is led by Principal Gabrielle Mills. The school has 184 students and 27 teachers.

Principal Mills started her teaching career at West and it is only fitting that she returned as principal. She has been at West for six years and has a total of 24 years of experience in teaching and administration combined.

When asked about her school and it's outstanding achievement she stated, "Each year we set goals for ourselves, and each year my teachers tell me they want to score higher and higher. They know their students and believe in them. They want to see them succeed and want everyone to know that they are among the best and brightest.

Our teachers and students work extremely hard each and every day. They have positive attitudes and a willingness to tackle anything that comes their way. We have so much support from our community and parents and couldn't do what we do without them. West Elementary has a family environment. Everyone looks after each other, encourages each other, and pushes each other to succeed. I am blessed to work with an amazing group of teachers, and I am so very proud of each of them."

We too are so proud of our children, their teachers and the administration for this outstanding achievement!

Keep up the hard work. Each of you make us proud!

Diane Jackson Memorial Park

Now Accepting Online Reservations

We are excited to announce starting November 1, the RV campsites, pavilion and ball field located within Diane Jackson Memorial Park will be able to accept online reservations and payments through the website Campspot.

This new partnership will provide easy and convenient rentals of our facilities. No longer will guests need to contact Town Hall. They will be able to go online, choose what they want to rent (RV site, primitive camp site, pavilion or ball field) and pay from the convenience of their computer or smart phone.

Having this online option will also give our RV park more exposure. Many who travel to MSU events with their campers and RVs don’t know about our park. With our exceptional rates and proximity to Starkville we hope to see increased bookings and revenue.

Fun Fact:  Daylight Saving Time was not invented by Benjamin Franklin as many believe. The idea originated with Englishman William Willett who led the first campaign to implement daylight saving time.
