What are the rights of students with disabilities? |

|
Public schools are prohibited by federal law from discriminating against people with disabilities, and cannot deny them equal access to academic courses, field trips, extracurricular activities, school technology, and health services. Educators and administrators must make necessary academic and medical accommodations, ensure equal access to educational activities and opportunities, and respond to harassment and bullying. |

As a member of the famous Kennedy family, Eunice Kennedy Shriver had considerable resources at her disposal. Thinking of her sister Rosemary, who had an intellectual disability, Shiver decided to direct her efforts towards improving the lives of those with disabilities. She contributed much as a founding member of the National Institute of Child Health and Development. Most notably, Shiver founded the Special Olympics. Starting as Camp Shriver in 1962, with the goal of creating a ground for opportunities and experiences. Since then, the Special Olympics has become a biennial event where over 3 million athletes have the opportunity to present their skills through a variety of sports and physical activities.
