Would new ferry services help your commute?

Auckland Transport (AT) are investigating the potential for extending one or more existing ferry services into the Wynyard Quarter area. WQ TMA have produced a short online survey to help gauge the views of commuters and residents in the area. There are six prizes to be won - 3 x $100 cash and 3 Blunt umbrellas - all you need to do is complete the online survey. The results will help AT to gain a better understanding of the potential demand for ferry services in the area, and guide any further investigation. Any new ferry services are likely to be electric, but not operational until 2027.

Bike thefts on the increase

In Auckland alone an estimated 2,500 - 5,000 bikes are stolen each year, according to figures from Bike Auckland. Many people don't report bike thefts to the Police, so the figures could be much higher. 529 Garage is a bike registration scheme, which is free to use and can help reunite bikes and owners. After introducing the scheme Vancouver, Canada they saw a 20% reduction in bike thefts. AT are offering free bike locks this summer - find out more here.

Will the UK introduce road pricing?

UK Transport committee concluded that drop in fuel-duty revenues from shift to electric requires urgent action. Motorists may have to pay by the mile to make up a $67bn(NZ) tax shortfall that will arise from the shift to electric vehicles. British MPs have called on the Government to act urgently to bring in a national road pricing scheme. Technology now exists to deliver a national scheme that prices up a journey based on the road, time and type of vehicle, offering better prices at less congested times. The Committee also suggested people should be incentivized to continue or convert to use public transport and active modes.
