Upward Bound

We had a group join us from Monroe Community College in the Upward Bound Program.   They were with us for two sessions.  The first day was all about learning the basics of sewing and each of them sewed their own pillow project.  On the second day they  learned how to stitch together a world map quilt to further their sewing skills and at the same time, help them learn about geography.  Great job everyone!  Please be sure to visit the Monroe Community College website for more information.

Saturday Kids' Club

Some recent projects from our Kids' Club!  If you don't already know, this is a free club, which takes place every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Kids' Club now has special themes each week so be sure to check out our Calendar to see what's coming up!

Upcoming Classes & Events

Sewing Machine 101/201

Make friends with a sewing machine in our shop, or bring yours from home. We will take you through the basics of machine operation and safety, and guide you toward sewing a project.

In Sewing Machine 201, build on the skills you've gained in Sewing Machine 101. Is there a sewing project that interests you, or that you want to complete? How can your newly-gained sewing machine skills help you achieve that goal? This is the place and time to learn!
These classes are great for ages 10 & up (or younger with an adult present).
Prerequisite: Sewing Machine 101

Offered Tuesday, August 14th

11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

 

Serger 101/201

Sergers can be a little intimidating but they are great sewing tools once you understand how to use and adjust them to suit your project!  In the 101 class, learn the basics of threading and tension.  For Serger 201, you've learned the basics but want to go further!  Bring your serger, or sit down at the shop sergers.  If you bring your own, don't forget your serger's manual and all its feet, too!

Mini Macramé Wall Hanging

Create your own unique mini macramé wall hanging!  You'll learn how to use different types of knotting techniques such as square knots and half hitches, to make your fiber art piece.  Bring any yarn you'd like to work with or use what we have available in Scrappy Land!

Attend both weekly sessions, or come as you are able.  $10/2-hour class.

Crochet Sewing Machine Doily

This little doily is for your sewing machine spool pin, which holds your thread.  On this spool pin there's usually just a small round piece of felt.  In this class you'll learn how to make your own fun and functional piece for your machine!

11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

 

Machine Buttonholes
Scared to tackle a project because of the buttonholes?  We'll show you how to get set up and get closure for your garment.  If you have a machine with a buttonhole foot, feel free to bring it along with your manual.  Or you can use our machines at the shop.

SewGreen at the Westside Farmers Market

SewGreen@Rochester will be at the Westside Farmers Market on Tuesday, August 28th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.  We'll have some fun activities for everyone so be sure to stop by and say hi!

Working with commercial Patterns

You've bought a sewing pattern, and opened the package. What's with all the tissue paper inside? We can teach you what to do with your pattern materials, and how to adjust it to fit you just right. 
Students may benefit from taking our Measure Up! class first

Make a Bag with Josefina

Want a simple way of building up your machine-sewing skills? Join us for this class! We will provide the materials, and you will leave with a brand new tote bag! And don't forget to bring your new tote bag in on a Scrappy Saturday! You can fill it with scraps and yarn ends for just $5, and who knows? You might make another bag from the scraps!
Offered every Thursday in September - 6, 13, 20, & 27
4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

 

Hand-spinning on a Spinning Wheel

Learn to make your own, unique hand-spun yarn on a spinning wheel! We’ll play with several types of prepared wool and discuss wheel maintenance, drafting, treadling, plying, and finishing techniques to make a balanced yarn. No previous experience needed.  If you have a wheel to bring to class, that's great--if not, you can borrow one of ours!

Make Do & Mend

Got a worn out zipper?  A hole in your favorite jeans?  A missing button?  A ripped seam?  Bring them in and we'll teach you how to fix all of these and more.  All by yourself!  Come learn basic mending skills with us!

11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

 

Frame Weaving
Woven wall hangings are popular again!  Learn how weave and create a unique fiber art piece with frame weaving.
Attend both weekly sessions, or come as you are able. $10/2-hour class.

Working with Dress Forms

Learn how padding a dress form can help you put together outfits and understand the fit of your clothing.

Professional measurements will be included.

Crochet Triangle Shawl
Get ready for the cooler weather with a pretty crochet triangle shawl!  We'll show you the basics on how to get started with this project as well as how to make simple increases and optional tassels.
Offered Monday, September 24th, and October 1st
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Unless otherwise noted, our two-hour classes are $10 each.

Thank you for your generous donations!  We accept donation deliveries on Tuesdays 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Fridays 11am to 2:00 p.m. and Saturdays 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Remember...

Every Saturday is Scrappy Saturday! Our small scrappy bags stuffed with scraps and rolls of fabric and/or unmarked balls of yarn are only $1 all day (regularly $3 on weekdays). Bring your own grocery-sized tote and stuff it full for only $5 (regularly $10). Stop by and fill a bag this Saturday, and every Saturday!
