Donating to a Teacher Support Circle!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month, we are excited to share MORE good news with you about our students!

CLASS FOUR at Tina’s School scored Number One in the district on their national exams! Our proud Class Four studends are featured in the picture above. This is very encouraging, and reinforces our belief that our students and teachers are doing very well at all grade levels!

We at REACH Shirati believe that one reason our students are excelling is that we have recruited such excellent, dedicated and caring teachers. We need YOUR SUPPORT to meet our commitment of paying our teachers and staff a fair market wage, and to provide them all with health insurance and a well-earned pension.

Join Our Teacher Support Circles

Our Teacher Support Circles are independent fundraising groups of families, friends, and coworkers committed to raise donations in support of our teachers. One of our Teacher Support Circles has set a matching challenge of $3000 in the next two months, so if you donate NOW they will match your donation before the end of March! Please share the love this Valentines Day and help us double your dollars!

Tina's Teachers

TEACHER FEATURE:

Meet Mr. Shabaan

Wanjala Denis Shabaan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 2015 from Eckernforde Tanga University in Tanga, Tanzania. He then taught classes in a secondary School for two years before coming to us in June 2017. Mr. Shabaan teaches Geography to Class 6 and 7, Kiswahili to Class 6, and Information and Communication Technology to Class 6. In his own words, "I love being a teacher, because this is my passion. I can say this is my family root, because in my family, my mother and father are teachers. And I feel proud to be a person who can transform the society. What I like about Tina's School is that Tina's is a non-profit school that provides education to society.... Tina's brings light among the young African boys and girls who have lost hope of receiving an education because of poverty or lack of school fees. Tina's School and other friends give them a chance to change their life. This is why I love Tina's and I feel proud to be a family member of Tina's School.

TEACHER FEATURE:

Meet Madame Akini

Asha Nyongesa Akini attended primary school in Kenya, and then earned her teacher’s certification in 2014 at Lala Girls School in Kenya. She teaches English to Class 5 and 6, and Science to Class 5.  and has been with us at Tina's since 2015. Mdm. Akini became a teacher because “it is the kind of job where I have opportunities to work with young people and make a difference in their lives.  At Tina's School, we put more effort into teaching our pupils.  Another reason I like Tina’s School is that the people who work at Tina’s are cared for.  Whenever anyone at Tina’s is in need, people are concerned and responsible.”

We are proud to have young dedicated teachers like Mr. Shabaan and Madam Akini at Tina’s School! They are inspiring role models to our students!

An Update on the water pump at Tina's School in Nyamagongo

In light of the continuing drought and our unfilled rainwater harvest tanks, about three months ago we started working on an alternative source of water for our students and teachers as well as the immediate Nyamagongo community. With some early donations, we were able to conduct a survey, find an underground clean and safe water supply, and dig a borehole. We are thrilled to announce that with the help of more generous donors like you, we have purchased a solar pump to provide a supply of water sufficient for our school use and to sell a moderate amount at market price. This is a huge investment for our school and we have you to thank for it. Asante Sana!

December Fundraising!

Thank you to all who attended our December party and fundraiser.  Our holiday bazaar was a hit with amazing homemade jams and chutneys, assorted gift items, and beautiful Kitenge fabric aprons straight from Shirati. There's no shortage of projects that need your support, so our fundraising continues and EVERY little bit counts!
