 Guy Standing's Visit

 Auckland

Guy spoke at our event in Auckland along with Keith Rankin, Dr. Sue Bradford and the Auckland Debating Society on August 31.

The event was a big success, Guy's visit has been a catalyst for pushing the debate here in New Zealand.

We have uploaded Guy's speech to our new Youtube account along with videos of Sue and Keith speaking.

Guy also spoke at Waikato University about the Precariat on August 30.

Highlight Quote: "Why romanticise long term stable jobs? We all say 'Thank God it's Friday"

The event was hosted by the research team led by Prof. Darrin Hodgetts (pictured) and Dr. Mohi Rua who are studying the Precariat in a Māori context.

Prof. Hodgetts was recently interviewed on RNZ about his work.

The Charter of the Forest was signed in 1217, two years after Magna Carta. In his recent visit Guy referred to this document as a basis for the basic income movement.

  • For further exploration here is an interview with historian Peter Linebaugh.
  • Here is an informative article from the Guardian linking basic income to the Charter.

We are developing plans for an event in November to join in the commemoration of the Charter in November. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the website and facebook.

Scoop UBI HiveMind Report

Scoop has released its report on their recent UBI HiveMind.

A highlight from the report:
94% of respondents believed a UBI would better facilitate unpaid work.

It was agreed that the discussion needs to continue. We will continue our work educating people, but we all have a role in spreading the word.

Social Movements, Resistance, & Social Change Conference. Sept. 6-8

Members of the BINZ executive presented two topics for the ESRA Conference.

  • Lowell and Michael presented on their basic income trial proposal.
  • Iain presented on his basic income calculator.

We presented in the 'income' stream of the conference, which was popular. There was some scepticism shown in the Q & A session, but interest was very strong.
