World Parks World Cup

'Bringing Communities and Conservation together throughSport'

Update, August 2017

Coaches Across Continents come to Crooks Corner, Pafuri.

In July we had our first on-field training with Coaches Across Continents, 1 week in South Africa and 1 week in Zimbabwe. To convey the impact of this on-field training in a single newsletter is impossible! To try and give you some idea we achieved:

  • 52 community coaches trained across 3 countries. South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
  • 3 national parks involved. Kruger, Limpopo and Gonarezhou.
  • Working with 20 Primary schools
  • 13 village youth teams
  • Impacted on 1,506 youth

With Charlie as the lead coach from CAC, Elvis, a CAC Community Impact Coach from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nicole, a Global Citizen with CAC,  the rapport and the learning environment they created, and the ease in which they conveyed important messages through football, was outstanding.  To see local educator transform in one week to be able to use football as a means to engage the young and the youth on topics such as gender equality, HIV/AIDs, conservation and self confidence, was an eyeopener and a pleasure to witness.

The self-directed learning methodology of the CAC programme is inspirational, once you have the skills the only thing stopping you from moving forward is yourself! The positive social messages which can be conveyed via football to the youth is very powerful, CAC proved this through their training programme, certifying Community Coaches in:

  • Skills for Life promoting Self-Directed Learning
  • Health and Wellness including HIV behaviour change
  • Female Empowerment including gender equity
  •  Conflict Prevention including social inclusion
  •  Child Rights Education
  • Women’s Rights Policy Education
  • Sport for Fun

THANK YOU TO COACHES ACROSS CONTINENTS!

Tshilidzi and the Michael Johnson Young Leaders Academy.

Having spent a week at the Michael Johnson Performance Centre, Tshilidzi came back as a mini celebrity in his village of Bennde-Mutale, Limpopo! Tshilidzi is now busy developing female soccer teams in his community of Bennde-Mutale and the wider Mutele community.  In Bennde we now have 40+ girls playing and on Women's Day South Africa, 9th August, we held an event with another local all female team from Tshikuyu. Over the next few months Tshilidzi will be helping develop further female teams and then establishing a league for all female teams from the wider area.  His work will be supported by the Michael Johnson Young Leader Academy, CAC and Friends of Mutale.

Amazing Anna!

Meet Anna, an amazing lady who has gone through more than most of us can imagine.  That includes a 2.5 meter crocodile attack in the Limpopo river!  Anna is our local creche teacher, who also  completed the CAC training, she was part of a female team in Bennde in the past, but due to her attack had to stop, then unfortunately the team did not continue. Now, with her training, she will be joining the local coaching team to develope an all female team and local leauge. We continue to look forward in supporting Anna and sharing her story with you as time goes on.

Vincent Mudzanani & On-line Education

Vincent is running our after-school programme and regularly has up to 45 kids attending his football training sessions! Vincent has been progressing very well and learning new skills on his on-line Sport for Social Impact course run by CAC. Vincent is now focusing on adapting games, looking at issues such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. Topics which are relevant to his local community.  This is on top of being part of the CAC training in South Africa.

Malipati Development Trust

A special thanks goes to Mr Moyo from the Malipati Develpment Trust, pictured here with Nicole.  Without Mr Moyo's dedication, endless drive and support we wouldn't have had such a succeful time in Zimbabwe. Mr Moyo wore his 'Nicole' hat everyday of the training.

Further thanks goes out to the rest of the Malipati Development Trust for help with transport, communitcations and the sourcing of food for the  training.

2017, GLTP, Pafuri Regional Championship Finals

Friends of Mutale, through it's World Parks, World Cup initiative have helped in part to sponsor the Sengwe Anti-Poaching Association games which acted as the regional playoff for Zimbabwe. Another playoff was held on the 5th August in the Mutele Tribal Area to see which South African team would be going through to the finals in Pafuri, Mozambique, this year it will be the team from Bennde-Mutale, winning via a penalty shootout!   The playoffs for the Mozambiqcan team will be held in September ready for the finals in mid-October!

This championship is a real oppurtunity for the people of the communities from the Pafuri Node of the GLTP to come together with the regional park authorities; to enjoy, to share stories, to share a drink and to feel part of a collective area which mightn't be possible without them.

Bring a little joy and excitement to coaches and kids from the area.

We have set up a new campaign, through One World Play, to raise 150 ultra-durable footballs for 30 primary schools /clubs in our focus area.  So far we have raise 15, giving fun and excitement to approx 450 kids from across 15 primary schools in the region.  $25 for a ball, which can last a lifetime, isn't too bad, these balls can survive the biggest thorns and the roughest terrain. We went through 10 normal leather balls over a 2 week period, whilst 5 ultra-durable ball are still going strong! Click the button below to donate a ball or 10!

Update on Rhino Art!

Friends of Mutale, through it World Parks, World Cup initiative was fortunate enough to partner up with Project Rhino Art.   We were lucky to able to bring it to Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, were Vince Mehers did a talk at his daughters school, Stepping Stones Montessori School. The response from the kids was amazing, especially after they learnt of  the terrible plight our rhino's face at the moment, all of the kids were horrified to find out that when they are adults there maybe no wild rhinos left for them to see!
