Introducing Faculty Guest,

Gregory T.S. Walker

Olympic Strings Camp is excited to announce a collaboration with the esteemed composer and violinist, Gregory T.S. Walker.  Not only will he be writing a piece for our chamber orchestra, but he will also be in residence to rehearse the piece and work with campers to collect nature sounds, digitally manipulate them, and incorporate them into the composition. You may enjoy his video of Vivaldi’s “Winter” for electric violin, strings and synthesizer.

Have you ever wanted to play electric violin, viola or cello? This may be your lucky summer, because Dr. Walker is working with NS Design to bring some electric instruments to camp for the improvisation classes he will be leading!

A fun fact about Gregory Walker is that he is the son of George Walker, the first African-American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize.  George is most famous for a moving piece called “Lyric for Strings.”  Here’s a video of “Lyric" from the London BBC Proms in 2017.

During the pandemic, Gregory Walker and his wife Lori created a fun video called Virtual Virtuoso that begins with Sarasate's famous Carmen Fantasy.  You may notice something unusual about this performance: he never stops smiling!  There’s true joy in their music making and this is all the more reason why we are thrilled to have him working with us as a composer, improv teacher, and chamber coach this summer!

Applications are currently OPEN for our summer camp at NatureBridge in Olympic National Park. Space is limited to 20 campers ages 12-18, so apply today!
