Giving  and Volunteering by Robert Campbell

It has been a challenging year as we deal with the challenges of the Covid Pandemic. Here at the Martha Retreat Centre, as we reflect on the past year, we thank the many people who generously contributed their time, talents, and financial resources to help make for a successful year. Through your efforts and those of our staff and dedicated Board of Directors we have been able to meet the challenges and uncertainties caused by the Pandemic.

This year we acknowledge

Giving Tuesday, November 30,

and, in doing so, invite you to consider giving a gift to the Centre. We appreciate donations in any amount and realize there are many worthy causes in need of support.

The programs offered by the Centre provide opportunities for groups and individuals to “Come Away and Rest Awhile” as they experience Gospel Hospitality. In today’s world, more than ever, there is a need for quiet places where we can escape the stresses of everyday life. Places where we can rest, reflect, pray, ponder, and leave feeling renewed in body, mind and spirit.

This year we have made it easier to donate by adding an e-commerce feature on our website.

You will still be able to make e-transfers, cash and cheques will also continue to be welcomed. For more details or to register with the CAFT program, contact the Centre at

403-328-3422 or email director@martharetreatcentre.ca .

In closing, this Benedictine Blessing seems appropriate:

“May the Lord look upon you with kindness.

May the Lord fill your heart with holy peace.

God’s love be forever within you.

May the Lord always bless you and keep you.”

Board Dialogue by Lise Schmidt

The Mission Statement for the Martha Retreat Centre Society is: “To provide a quiet, welcoming space where people, individually or in groups, can come away and rest awhile, nourish their spirits and open their hearts to God’s call to them in the current reality of their life’s circumstances.”

Our third discussion about the Mission Statement centered around the words “…can come away and rest awhile…” As a Board of Directors, we were asked what these words mean to us - when applied to the Centre – and here are a few of our responses:

  • A place I can go myself or with others to have quiet, peace, rest

  • Come away from the busyness and the chatter of the world

  • Allow yourself to be inactive to regain strength and health

  • Even farmers fields need rest

  • Renewed

  • Enter into God’s peace

  • Rest: quiet meditation; silence

  • “Can” – this means it’s an action on my part

  • Compassion for those who make the break and come

  • Restorative rest

  • Be open to God at my core

  • “Can” – is an invitation to be nourished

One of the big highlights that patrons mention is the feeling of “peace and quiet” they feel when they arrive at the Centre. It seems – to many – that life simply slows down a bit when they walk through the doors! From time to time, we all need to take some time to “rest” – be it physically, mentally, emotionally and/or spiritually. We have continued to work hard to offer programming which will provide rest in a variety of manners. As a Board of Directors, we too take the time we need at the Martha Retreat Centre to rest and renew. This Centre, which is a special gem for those who have discovered it, is indeed a gift to those who need a break from the busyness of their lives.

Blessed by so many!

Over the course of this challenging year, we were blessed by so many people, in so many ways at the Martha Retreat Centre. Here are a few highlights we’ve compiled:

  • We had 55 volunteers participate in a variety of events.

  • The volunteer hours totaled 4460.75 hours.

  • These volunteer hours were equal to an economic value of $120,440.

  • Our first “Music on the Grounds” had 48 attendees.

  • The silent auction from Music on the Grounds raised $3500.

  • We had 900 visits to the Centre in 73 different programs.

  • 78 donors generously donated $52,400 to the Martha Retreat Centre.

  • 5742 E-Newsletters were sent.

As you can see, we recognize the blessings that come our way each and every day. We thank all of you for what you bring to the Martha Retreat Centre!
