Women of the World

With the holiday season, it is easy to get lost in ourselves, in our needs and our wants. Imagine how much better we would all feel, how much more we would appreciate what we have, if we took that extra time to look out for one another; not just during this time of year, but all year, every day.

Celebration of Success

The WoW Celebration of Success recently held on December 9th was an extraordinary success. The event celebrated significant milestones of 30 women who reached their goals of becoming independent. The atmosphere was enthusiastic and fun. The success of the WoW event was not only measured by the impressive turnout but also by the camaraderie and support of the women for each other. We are so proud of all their accomplishments throughout 2023 and know they will continue to work hard to become self-reliant.

We give much gratitude to Minky Couture for donating blankets to the awardees, Hearts Knit Together for donating gift bags for all women in attendance, and to Nobu Muranaka for donating his amazing photography skills. Thank you!!

December's Activities

ShePlace Holiday Party

We extend our heartfelt gratitude for being invited to participate in the annual ShePlace Holiday Social hosted at Modern West Fine Art! It was truly a pleasure to join for an evening filled with joy, laughter, and the magic of the season as we came together to cultivate new and existing connections, and dance the night away.

Health Literacy Workshops

We concluded the year of workshops with the final classes in the Health Literacy series; Nutrition, Cancer Prevention, and Holistic Healing. Designed to enhance our client's understanding of health information, medical terminology, and healthcare systems, these Health Literacy workshops played a crucial role in empowering our clients to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Through interactive sessions, our clients learned to navigate healthcare and gain skills and the confidence needed to advocate for their own health, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more informed community. The staff that was in attendance learned right along side with our clients and we are grateful to all those that came and presented our workshops. We wish everyone health, wellness, self-advocacy and happiness.

New Employee & New Board Member

Naween came with her family from Afghanistan as refugees fleeing the Taliban. She had originally completed schooling in her home country to go into law but upon arrival in the US, she decided she wanted to switch her major

to Computer Science. She completed English classes at Brigham Young University and immediately enrolled at SLCC to complete her degree. She hopes to also continue at Weber State.  After completing her One Refugee internship with WoW, she continued to volunteer

her time by offering translation services and teaching English classes. Naween is extremely dedicated to supporting our Afghani refugees, as well as committed to her studies at SLCC. She works part-time in the WoW office and is looking forward to supporting our wonderful clients! Her positive presence and dedication make her a delight to have on our team.

Amy Tieu is a graduate of the University of Utah where she holds a BS in Mathematics.  She has over 15+ years of experience in the financial industry.  Starting her career at Goldman Sachs as an operational analyst in Foreign Exchange, she now serves as a Vice President with Key Equipment Finance working with Utah businesses that range from $5MM to over $1BB in revenue.  As an equipment finance lender she helps businesses access capital that is needed for growth and updating existing equipment that helps companies generate revenue.  Not all solutions are straightforward and she prides herself in doing what is right for each company and their growth targets.  Outside of work, Amy has a young family with two boys, ages 4 and 2.  She and her husband enjoy sharing their love of the outdoors with their kids, from skiing, biking, hiking, climbing, fishing and camping.  If there is any opportunity to be outdoors, she and her family will make it happen!

We are thrilled to welcome Naween to our staff and Amy as a valued member of our Board of Directors. We are excited that our WoW family is growing and we are confident that both women will make a tremendous contribution to our organization.

Staff Christmas Party

On December 21st, we joyfully gathered together for a staff Christmas Party. We enjoyed one another's company and had fun learning about each other's "favorite things." We laughed, danced, shared good food and exchanged favorite gifts. It was a delightful coming together in celebration as friends and coworkers.
