It seems impossible that we are at the end of the tenth month of 2023. This foretells the impending end to another Liturgical Year Lectionary cycle and the arrival of the Advent season. The next two Sundays in the Lectionary include Readings from Isaiah, Leviticus, 1 Thessalonians, and Matthew, with a pair of familiar Psalms. The largest amount of music for these two Sundays is comprised of works by or based on the works of a pair of 20th Century giants of British composition: Charles Villiers Stanford and Ralph Vaughn Williams. Stanford was born in Dublin to a well-to-do, musically literate family and spent most of his life in England, while Vaughn Williams was born in a Cotswolds village, Down Ampney, the son of the local vicar. Stanford was educated at Cambridge before studying music in Leipzig and Berlin. He was instrumental in the founding of the Royal College of Music and a professor of composition at Cambridge where some of his pupils, including Vaugh Williams, surpassed his fame. Vaughn Williams said of Stanford: “In Stanford's music the sense of style, the sense of beauty, the feeling of a great tradition is never absent. His music is in the best sense of the word Victorian.” Vaughn Williams has been described as “visionary” and Michael Kennedy, his biographer, says that the music has a strongly individual blending of the modal harmonies familiar from folk‐song with the French influence of Ravel and Debussy. This Sunday’s opening organ Voluntary is by Stanford. It is a perfectly captivating setting of “an old Irish church melody” that we know as St. Columba, a tune for a metrical setting of the 23rd Psalm, hymn 645 in The Hymnal 1982. The concluding Voluntary is based on the tune Duke Street, first published anonymously in Henry Boyd’s Select Collection of Psalms and Hymn Tunes (1793). Duke Street was credited to John Hatton (b. Warrington England, c. 1710; d. St. Helen’s, Lancaster, England, 1793) in William Dixon’s Euphonia (1805). Virtually nothing is known of Hatton, other than that he lived on Duke Street in St. Helen’s and that his funeral was at the Presbyterian chapel there. Jan Bender, Dutch-born German, who spent most of his career in America, composed the sturdy Festive Prelude that concludes that day’s service. The Offertory anthem is Stanford’s glorious setting of a tune from The Sottish Psalter 1635 and a text by William Cowper (pronounced ‘Cooper’, b. Hertfordshire, England 1731; d. Norfolk England, 1800) who is regarded as one of the best early romantic poets. To biographers, he is also known as “mad Cowper.’ Although Cowper frequently battled depression, doubt, and melancholy, this text expresses an intimate walk with God. That walk is rooted in scripture (st. 1), rejoices in the Holy Spirit (st. 2) and concludes with the prayer of the first stanza which is now sung with increased confidence and serenity. On October 29th, Ralph (pronounced ‘Rafe’) Vaughn Williams takes center stage. The opening Voluntary is based on The Call, hymn 487 in The Hymnal 1982, adapted from RVW’s setting of “Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life” by poet George Herbert, one of RVW’s Five Mystical Songs for baritone. chorus, and orchestra, arranged for organ by Alec Wyton. Dr. Wyton points out, “Every note in this piece, save one, is found in Vaughn Williams’ exquisite melody. Which is one of his perfect miniatures.” The concluding Voluntary is RVW’s majestic organ setting of Hyfrydol, the tune associated with the “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!” text, one of his Three Preludes Founded on Welsh Hymn Tunes for organ. The Offertory Anthem is a magnificent setting of texts from Psalm 84 and Psalm 90. It includes some profoundly soaring melodies for the choir, some solid organ writing, and a glorious ending incorporating the hymn tune “St. Anne” with the “O God, our help in ages past” text—our concluding hymn on that Sunday. |
