Ohhhh Mrs. Dias is flying over someone's Thanksgiving dinner. I see so many delicious things to eat! It's hard to pick my favorite. If I had to it's a toss up between the turkey and the pie! What is your favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving? |

Greetings, Academy Family and Friends, I hope you are healthy and looking forward to some relaxing time next week. I continue to be very appreciative of your honesty and support as we work to keep everybody safe at school. It is alarming to see the Covid numbers climbing in our state, but I am confident that our school is not a place where Covid is spread. The teachers and staff work tirelessly to ensure that students are wearing masks, washing hands, and are maintaining physical distance. Our custodial crew goes above and beyond every day to make sure our school is so clean that the floors actually squeak! I am very grateful for every member of this community. Let’s keep following the Governor’s guidance so we can get rid of Covid! On the topic of being grateful, it has been an absolute joy to watch students expand upon their natural curiosity and flourish despite the differences in school this year. The Nebula News has done a wonderful job highlighting all of the different ways in which students are able to explore their interests, both in a remote and a hybrid setting. Having more academic content available online has connected the adults in new ways, too. One of my favorite things to do on Wednesdays is to scroll through the Academy facebook page and look at all of the art projects that students and adults are doing! I am proud and happy that you can all see what your children are learning about in Library, Art, Music, P.E. and Spanish as well! Keeping these virtual connections alive while we are not able to gather is good for our hearts and keeps us going. Thank you for all that you do! Kelly |

This month the kindergartners have music with Mrs. Davenport for enrichment! In November, the kindergartners explore the many versions of the folk story called Stone Soup. In the story of Stone Soup, some hungry travelers come to a village looking for some food. When the villagers won't share, the travelers decide to make soup from a stone. Through curiosity and the magic of sharing, the villagers each end up sharing what they've got and make a stone soup feast together! As part of the Stone Soup celebration, the villagers dance together. Check out the pictures below to see the Stone Soup dance Mrs. Davenport and the kindergartners created together using patterns! |

As we make our way into winter, and continue to face challenges that come with Covid-19, you may notice that worries and anxieties are starting to increase in you and your student. For students, this can sometimes look like a shift in behavior, such as an increase in tantrums, difficulty focusing, physical symptoms like belly aches or headaches, or directly exhibiting fears about things like being away from the grown-ups they feel closest to. It is important for our students that we validate their fears and worries and try to help them process and find tools to manage their feelings, rather than willing the feeling to go away. At school there has been an increase in social-emotional learning, which is a great way to help get ahead of anxieties that might arise. These efforts help students feel a sense of community and connectedness; a focus on social-emotional learning can directly impact a student's ability to process and manage big feelings. You can continue this work at home, by simply talking to your Academy Star about how they are doing, what they are feeling, and what they need. Mindfulness is also a great way to practice managing our feelings when they arise. If we practice mindfulness, when we’re faced with a big feeling, we can use the tool that we’ve practiced, instead of blowing our top. For some work you can do at home, check out the school counseling page on mindfulness or listen to this read aloud of The Very Hungry Worry Monsters and complete the activity! As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. | | |
