OCTOBER UPDATE

The C256 Foenix Project

Through Hell or High Water

In October, the project has been testing my determination. I have to admit that I never thought I would spend so much time in the bring up phase of that first board. My expectations were that by mid-October I would be already developing the 2D Graphics engine. As of today, I am nowhere close to that point. Actually, I have been struggling with a very subtle and nasty problem that I believe I found the source of. My hubris got the best of me during the design phase of the project. I completely overestimated the importance of applying the same rules for very fast clock circuit to the more modest one like 14Mhz. At the end of the day, noise is a problem that exists at every clock speed and it needs to be dealt with the same way, either it is a 200Mhz or a 14Mhz clock system. Lesson learned.

Time for Revision B

Now that I have pinpointed the specifics of my different problems/bugs that I found along the way and also after a very enlightening conversation with a friend of mine during Portland Retro gaming. I have decided to begin the process of creating a revision B that will encompass the different changes needed to fix my problems but also to go through a BOM cost reduction exercise. Which will leads me inexorably to reconsider many of my early choices hence to remove a lot of unnecessary parts and/or possible features that some of you might have wanted. I will give the details of the new set of features in the next update.

Portland Retro Gaming Expo

As you can see, my visit to the Portland Retro gaming expo has been fruitful. I had the opportunity and the chance to meet the very person that sparked the creation of the C256 Foenix Project.

Me and David had the opportunity to sit down for a while to discus the different aspect and the status of the C256 Foenix. David also shared his desire to create his own project. As you will see on his forum page (see below) , he's talking about the different possibilities that he's investigating right now to create his version of his dream computer.

After returning from the convention, we communicated further and we have established that the C256 Foenix in its current form is not adequate for his requirements.

For one, it is too expensive... And since I started the design with a certain theme and a certain number of restrictions to give the product a certain look and feel, it is somewhat far away from what David would want. Also, I shared that I would like to see my project through.

Obviously David is not constrained by anything aside of his own wish list. His main goal is to achieve it at the best price possible.

However, I talked about my desire to help him achieve his own goal as we do share a common vision for the purpose of the computer. So we have agreed that the best would be to wait for Revision B of the Foenix and to go from there. David's computer could possibly be a watered down and/or a David's spin of the C256 that could possibly be compatible with its originator or it could also be a new design with some of the Foenix IP (graphics engine) in it, or else...

Still a lot to discuss. More to come on the Subject in the Future...

World of Commodore 2018

Saturday Dec 1st, Sunday Dec 2nd, 2018

After considerations and cost evaluation, I have made the decision to not physically attend the TPUG "World of Commodore 2018". However, I have offered Leif to support him in any way if he was to going to talk about the C256 Foenix.
