New Bags! Custom + Compostable! |
Ah, the search for the perfect packaging… Since we opened, we’ve changed packaging now 4 times — never quite content with either the look or the environmental impact our packaging had. It’s always been our goal to move to custom printed coffee bags (in addition to our custom labels), but only once we had found a bag that was fully compostable — both at a commercial facility, and most importantly to us, at home. That means you can throw these empty bags in your compost bin at your house, and also in those that may be found outside a commercial or residential building that are picked up by a truck. In our eyes, sustainable packaging is only as sustainable as one’s access to doing it correctly. Other things we love about our new packaging? On the bottom of the bag, in addition to the standard roast date, you’ll find a date that we recommend drinking the coffee after. This is the date that the coffee will have off-gassed enough for it to be at its peak for enjoyment. You can of course enjoy the coffee prior to that date, but it provides a recommendation we’d make in person, just in writing for your convenience (and because unfortunately, our bags can’t talk yet. Is that next?!) |

You sip, we give: In support of Food 4 Farmers |
little seed COFFEE ROASTERS donates 50 cents from each retail coffee bag sold in our shop, and 25 cents from each pound of coffee a wholesale partner purchases to our ‘you sip, we give’ initiative in support coffee farming communities and those who empower them. We’re proud to direct this support to Food 4 Farmers, through the implementation of programs to diversify income for coffee farmers and to help supplement the availability of healthy food year-round. F4F helps to sustain farming families in the thin months between in harvests. What is F4F working towards? Smallholder coffee farmers can face a lapse in steady income between the periods when they’re able to sell their crop. This lapse can lead to food insecurity and the inability to build savings to create a financial cushion and to expand their coffee production. How are we helping? Through collective support, F4F takes action in myriad ways. By providing education and support on the local level to implement the farming of supplemental crops, honey, and helping create additional streams of revenue — these communities are able to access more food year round, as well as sell goods at local markets to bolster income. Each time you either pick up a bag of coffee from our shop to take home or enjoy our coffee at one of our awesome wholesale partners’ spots, you’re helping to support this wonderful cause! |

little seed Ledger: Tasting Cups! little seed Ledger is our blog inspired by the little seed team and what we’re passionate about. This month, we share a little about Anthony’s cup tasting competition journey (and what that all means!) |
Last month, Anthony competed in the US Coffee Championships Preliminary Cup Tasters* competition in Burlington for the second year in a row. In an industry where your nose and palate are key, the competition is a fun way to keep you on your toes and to share the experience of smelling, slurping, and tasting with other folks in the industry. But the best news to come was the performance. Anthony got all five sets correct in two minutes and 42 seconds, placing him tied for second (missed 1st place by five seconds…so close) and secured him entry into the USCC 2024 Qualifiers this January. See you soon, Houston! *the US Coffee Championships Cup Tasters competition places sets of three cups — two are the same, one is different. The competitor’s task is to identify the outlier coffee in each set. Each set has unique coffees from the previous set. The preliminaries had five sets. The qualifiers will have eight. |
