Have you seen the famous photo from 1932 of a menorah proudly displayed in the window opposite a Nazi-occupied building adorned with a swastika? (See it HERE) Newsweek reports, “ On the back of the photo, the woman who took it, Rachel Posner, wrote in German, "'Death to Judah' so the flag says, 'Judah will live forever,' so the light answers."

Rachel Posner understood that the Jewish people have grit, perseverance, and above all faith that the light will always prevail. Beyond any challenge. Beyond any regime that would rise up to destroy us.

That is why, in the Hanukkah story, the first thing that the Hasmoneans did when they regained control over the Temple in 165 BCE, was to rededicate it by lighting the Temple menorahs. Hanukkah itself means rededication.

We are a people who are dedicated to the cause of righteous light/ like the psalm says in morning prayers, light is sown for the righteous.

And we will rededicate ourselves to the cause of righteousness no matter what challenge our community faces. We will always re-emerge to bring in the spiritual light. To keep the light of the sacred burning strong.

This is what we have done during this dark time of a global pandemic. We have emerged ready to seek connection and the light of sacred text study and ritual across the globe. When darkness came, we rose up with the light of dedication to community connections. And indeed this light has warmed our own hearts in these cold times.

This coming Sunday, you are invited to gather together as a global community for the final night of Hanukkah- to kindle the lights of the Hanukkah menorahs and to celebrate our dedication to bringing in the light. Please register HERE if you haven’t already.

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

Rabbi Miller served on a panel with colleagues Rabbi Joe Mendelsohn and Rabbi Sarah DePaolo to discuss the Torah portion known as Vayeshev - the first in a series of four portions that discuss the life of Joseph. Hear it HERE.

LA BOARD OF RABBIS DISCUSS MENTAL HEALTH

Rabbi Miller was honored to participate in this gathering of LA area rabbis to discuss the importance of mental health (for an article on the gathering from the Jewish Journal, please click HERE). We shared resources and best practices and will continue to meet under the leadership of the LA Board of Rabbis and Rabbanit Alissa Thomas-Newborn (You may remember her from our S1E2 of People Keeping It Sacred, which you can view HERE). She's clearly still keeping it sacred!

PLEASE REGISTER: BALANCING YOUR INNER LIFE

Jewish tradition houses some of the most beautiful teachings on character qualities. A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda decided to these sacred texts together, organized into various character qualities that he felt would inspire people to live lives of meaning. He called his work “Duties of the Heart,” and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement (of Exceptional Character Qualities) is based. The book is available for free on Sefaria.org, and so we will take time each week to study teachings and explore how we might make sense of them in our lives today.

Join us for one class, several, or all 9 weeks worth of classes! Please invite your friends to take the series with you, too!

All classes are Sundays 10am PT/1pm ET on:

THE LONGEST NIGHT

Last year over 325 lives were lost on the streets of Orange County, and this number only continues to increase.  In fact, the LA Times, in an article on Orange County homelessness  this past week, reported that homeless deaths in Orange County has already hit 321 - view it HERE.  That includes people of all ages and of every gender.

Each December 21st—- the longest night of the year and the day that has become known as National Homeless Persons Memorial Day—- faith leaders, concerned citizens, and advocates for the homeless come together to remember and honor those who have died during the year. Because of Covid, the Orange County memorial will be videotaped and aired on YouTube at 7pm on that evening. Please stay tuned as more information will be shared in this newsletter. Together may we bring dignity to those who have died on the streets.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 95 members strong from 26 different states and 7 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.
