It’s Summertime! We are fast approaching the month of August. We will have Birthdays to celebrate, babies will be born and some of your families will enjoy gathering for celebration. Look forward to all the good that a new month can bring. Growing up in the Midwest; Naperville, Illinois to be specific, I’ve always thought of August as the true Dog Days of Summer. Very warm days, afternoons filled with annual festivals, beautiful evenings and sometimes cool nights with the start of school and fall just around the corner. No National Holidays; just time with friends and family. Of course living in Florida for the past 32 years, August is just plain hot morning, noon and night; and the rainy season is still in full swing with the hint of an occasional tropical storm. But School; it is just around the corner and at this time the start of Lee County School has been postponed until August 31st. Several of us delivered all of the donations from our Back to School Supplies Drive on Tuesday and met our new Principal for the first time; Dr. Thomas Millins. Our Community and members amaze me every year by their generosity. Big Thank You to Karen Durand and her committee for yet another successful year. You are all going to really like the new Pine Island Elementary Principal! He would much prefer if we simply called him Principal Tom, and he’s been following us for many years. Tom is joining P.I.E. from the North Fort Myers Academy of the Arts. Most heart warming to me was that he shared that his mentor and the person that introduced him to the Lee County School System was Principal Gay Thompson. Gay was married to the very first Pine Island Elementary Principal that we worked with when the Matlacha Hookers first started; Tommy Thompson! Principal Tom will be attending the August General Membership meeting along with a few of the Teachers. We’ll be presenting them with our final commitment from the 2019 Derby of $2,500 to offset the Teachers out of pocket costs and teaching tools that they will need as they begin a new school year. Your Board is doing it’s best to keep everyone that would like to attend meetings safe by requiring that you wear face masks and keeping those that have not been socializing properly distanced; like ME! However; if you would prefer to attend by calling in or online by WebEx; those details are in this issue and will also be provided in the next Hooker Herald. It will be released a couple days before the August meeting; instead of on the 10th, so that you will all have the most current information available. August is the month that we start to accept nominations for the 2021 Board of Directors! There are five one year Executive Board positions that include Madam President, Vice Madam President, Secretary, Treasurer and Chaplain; and there are three two year Directors positions. There are three Directors that will remain on the Board each year. More details to follow at the meeting. Please continue to keep yourselves safe and enjoy August! Madam DJ |

A REQUEST FROM THE BEACON OF HOPE We URGENTLY NEED VOLUNTEER DRIVERS to help cover our medically necessary, scheduled transportation appointments through August. We have just been notified that our regular driver has had a family emergency, July 29th was his last day. We are seeking volunteers to drive islanders to and/or from appointments. Below are the times when rides are needed. If you can help us with any of these (one ride, a round trip ride or a day), it would be so helpful with meeting this critical need for our community. Please let me know as soon as possible, if you can help, and what times you can help. Joyce Kopcik (assisting while Nancy is on vacation) joycekopcik@gmail.com or 239-283-1235 |
