Ebbetts Pass Corridor,

Santa will have a bridge to cross

Murphys Drive has taken longer than anticipated.  The project is due to be completed the week of December 9.

General Plan

After approximately 13 years, the Calaveras General Plan was approved on November 12.  In its preparation, there were many community engagements, Planning Commissioners, Board of Supervisors, Planning Directors, agencies reviews, and public meetings.  Thanks to all of the staff and citizens for being a part of the long-range vision for land use in Calaveras.  The plan has something in it for you to like or not like.  Under the State Government Code, a general plan can be amended four times a year.

Cannabis Cultivation & Commerce

On October 22, the Board, on a 3-2 vote, adopted an ordinance regulating commercial and non-commercial cannabis cultivation.  We also adopted the application fee for a commercial Cannabis permit, $12,561.  The fee takes effect December 23.  At that time, qualified cultivators can start the process for a County permit.  This has been a difficult and ardent issue.  I believe I made the right vote to tightly regulate this industry which, through fees, will pay for its regulation, help remove the illegal growers, reduce the black market, and bring revenue to the County and local businesses.

Murphys Park

Patrick Martin, County Facilities Manager, CalFire CCC crew, County Road Department, and especially the Utica Power Authority, have helped clear the area of brush and dead trees.  In the spring more will be done.  In partnership with the Murphys Community Club which manages the park, plans will be developed to design walking paths, plant trees, etc.  Ideas are most welcome.

Prescribed Burns

There will be more prescribed burns as this is one of several protocols used to manage weeds and growth to help reduce the risk of wildfires.  Since many of these prescribed burns are in the Ebbetts Pass area, we are seeking ways to communicate with residents.  Working through the Office of Emergency Services in partnership with Ebbetts Pass Fire District and CalFire, we want to develop options that will help our residents.  If you have thoughts on what will work for you, please let me know.

As a side bar, there are several firebreaks being done from Murphys through Arnold.  Fire safety also depends on each of us keeping our property maintained.

Housing and Homeless

Health and Human Services has a Homeless Task Force, which any member of the public is welcome to join.  A majority of the Board did not support the two projects that were planned in San Andreas.  I feel strongly that this is a community issue and we each have a part we can play.

I wish each of you a memorable holiday season.  On Christmas Day we have a community dinner at the Native Sons of the Golden West in Murphys.  This has become a tradition for many people.  Share a dinner with family, friends and neighbors.
