Hi friends, I hope February has been treating you well! We had a righteous cold snap there for a bit, which was remedied by a "heat wave" -- it's been in the 20s, 30s, and even 40s the past few days! These are very unusual temperatures for February, prompting us Alaskans to venture out in shorts and t-shirts, and even sandals (not unusual). Seriously, 30 degrees feels amazing after two weeks of 30 below! Add the daily gained light and you can almost taste the optimism in the air! We're ripe with up here, even though spring breakup is still months away. |

February is a month that beckons us to celebrate the warmth of love and to focus on heart health. While I am kind of anti-valentine’s in spirit, and burnt-out on heart-health after 10+ years in a clinic, I’ve always wanted to explore the intertwining themes of love (and death) and hearts. Of course I can’t be normal about it… hello to my #bleedingheartmonth project. |

I had (impossibly) high hopes of creating a new piece every day, or larger pieces over a span of days like the one shown, but I've had to set this project aside for a moment to meet some deadlines. I am happy to say that these pieces, however many it ends up being, will likely be incorporated into one of my upcoming solo shows, happening back to back in April and May. More on those starting next month! |

A year in the works, Denali Brewing Co. wanted to update a couple of their beer can labels with custom art. The new artwork and can designs align seamlessly not only with the brews they’d contain, but also with the company’s core values. | | |

My first logo of the 2024! Wild Dawgs is a food trailer in Cleveland, Tennessee (and owned by my uncle!). Known for their hotdogs, they also serve unique nachos, loaded baked potatoes, hand-pressed lemon shakers, and so much more. They needed a brand refresh to help the community know they serve more than just hotdogs, and to appeal to corporate catering opportunities. |

Debuting on the Spring Equinox, the Golden Heart Magazine is a celebration of the evolution of Fairbanks — an evolution that weaves together the past, the present, and the future. It explores the heart of our city and the eclectic, creative people that are in it. |

It’s time to say goodbye to one of my most favorite mural projects… The pediatrics department of a local clinic has moved out of their third floor department in the iconic downtown building, leaving this mural behind. While destruction isn’t imminent, the space is will be vacant until new owners/tenants move in... and then, who knows... |

The doors are closed and the department has officially moved out at the time of this newsletter, so this playful scene won’t be enjoyed by bright little minds any more. I was able to hire a professional photographer (shoutout to Sarah Lewis!) to capture some final images of it last week. I was a bit gutted when I had first heard about the move… and heartbroken. I know murals don’t last forever, but this one was pivotal for me: It was the first time I took the initiative and put myself out there; I wrote a pitch letter, made a sketch and a hand drawn mock up, assembled packets and mailed it to the doctors and everyone on the board that was responsible for the remodel of the unit. It was the first time that I really designed artwork for a space and for an audience. I made it playful, with salmon sailboats, a king grab carousel, and a puffer fish hot air balloon. I made it colorful, to add brightness to the space. And I made it interactive, with hidden pictures in the waves… It was the first time I had to manage the logistics of working around a construction site, and making sure not to interfere with their build schedule. I was a lot of evenings after work and long Saturdays, to get it done within a 30-day window.
I made a lot of connections, many of which I’m still in touch with to this day, 12 years later. My daughter always beamed when she saw it at ever doctor visit, exclaiming (loudly) how it was her mommy that painted it to anyone that will listen. It melts my heart that she’s so proud of me. Ah, 12 years is a good run, eh?✌🏼 |
