“There is no clear one way to look as a leader in collaborative action, which is kind of the beauty of it…every experience is on the table as a qualification to be a leader in collaborative action.” |

How can collaborative action support joy and community healing? And what does this mean for how we define and understand leadership? In our latest episode, we speak with Reann Gibson, a community-based researcher and advocate who reflects on her decades-long work to support food access, transformation justice, and community-based participatory research in the Boston area. Reann shares how collaborative action can shift the narrative of leadership, making space for all different types of leaders, and how it can foster community-controlled and authentic spaces to support long term healing. Tune in to hear more about how participatory research efforts, such as the Healthy Neighborhood Study, can offer important lessons for creating these opportunities.

New Leadership Article: Researchers Build Community Power to Influence Health in Gentrifying Neighborhoods |
August’s Leadership Article is written by Reann Gibson, and was previously published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Reann shares findings from the Healthy Neighborhoods Study (HNS), including how “ownership of change” - a sense of power and control over changes in their neighborhoods, including who benefits from the changes - is linked to increased levels of health and happiness. Read more about the study and learn suggestions for ensuring health and equity in community development plans. You can also hear Reann speak about this research and more on the latest episode of In the Arena with NOW.

“Turf-ism” can be defined as non-cooperation or conflict between organizations with seemingly common goals or interests, and can threaten coalition vitality. The Tension of Turf was developed by the Prevention Institute, as a tool to help practitioners to identify, address, and manage turf issues and offers practical support for skillfully managing the dynamic tension that commonly arises when people collaborate. Check out this resource, and many more, on coalitions and community collaboration in the NOW Resource Library.
