Open Space Authority Urban Grant Program Launches!

Through this grant, in 2021 we will provide 19 programs and more.

Ten of those programs are Virtual Nature Experiences in partnership with Virtual Photo Walks and only available to those people isolated by illness or disability and unable to access nature on their own. The other nine are Community Hikes, contingent on County Health Orders we will be inviting members from the public to join us on a hike. All programs are recorded, later edited, and posted to our YouTube page.

Additionally, grant funds are allocated to our Boys & Girls Club Summer Science Project, Youth Alliance Alive Outside Adventure Series, as well as on the job training for West Valley College Park Management and San Jose State University Environmental Studies interns.

Thank you, Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority Board of Director’s for giving us the opportunity to continue to bring environmental education, inclusion, and nature for all.

We look forward to working with our partners and collaborators in 2021: Bay Area Wilderness Training, West Valley College Park Management, Boys & Girls Club of Silicon Valley, Youth Alliance, Edward and Janice Rooks, Wildlife Education & Rehabilitation Center, Virtual Photo Walks, and Land Trust of Santa Clara Valley.

Building Community Through Partnerships

Bay Nature Institute joins Saved By Nature in partnership. We share the same passion for science and nature, conservation, and recreation.

Bay Nature connects the people of the San Francisco Bay Area to our natural world and motivates people to solve problems with nature in mind.

In addition, every year Bay Nature honors the contributions of a conservation activist, an environmental educator, a community hero, and an up-and-coming young conservationist at their annual Local Hero Awards.

Volunteer Park Interpreters

Volunteer Training is Moving Forward

Thank you to those that attended our January 16th virtual enrichment about interpretive techniques since we were not able to meet in person due to COVID. We learned about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs from Board Treasurer Aniko Millan, the six principles of interpretation by Freeman Tilden from founder Richard Tejeda and techniques of interpretation from Board Vice President Teri Rogoway.

What's next? We are coordinating a date for March with our SBN volunteer training team. Once we finalize a date, we will email the volunteers with the date and time, the location will be at Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve where you will learn how to lead COVID-Safe interpretive hikes.

Please look out for an email with your free 2-year digital subscription to Bay Nature Magazine.

Natural History

Maybe you are one of those people who took the threat of a global pandemic seriously, right from the start. You had your gloves and mask and hand sanitizer in tow long before anyone else seemed to be so concerned. Maybe it was the zombie movies, or television shows about science fiction attacks from outer space, but you felt you were in your element, ready for anything. But unlike the movies, this pandemic has taken almost a year longer than the two-hour adventure you are used to seeing on a screen. And maybe it got too close to home, and people you love have passed. Maybe you are tired of being ready and careful and isolated.
