Makuru - season of fertility

   Winter: June-July

Time to move inland - More food available.

Makuru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year come into full swing. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

27 July 2:00–4:00pm

Mattie Furphy House, Swanbourne

Using James Hillman’s essay “A Snake is Not a Symbol” as a centering point, participants will be guided through ways of reconfiguring their associations with various lifeforms to reawaken astonishment and wonder over their ‘presences’

We will question the mystery of ‘isness’. Are we as writers gluttonous taxidermists or gentle excavators of the unique cadences of plants and animals (including human creatures)? Discuss the possibility of formal poetic structure as a mirroring of the natural world and ‘rewild’ our words.

Within this workshop we will look at examples in the work of John Ryan, Robert Hass, Judith Beveridge, Nina Cassian, Robert Adamson, Basho and others.

We will aim to produce at least one piece of writing each and develop some new techniques of looking and transcribing by the conclusion of the workshop.

Members $20/ Non members $25. To book ring 9384 4771 or email fellowshipaustralianwriterswa@gmail.com
