Black Business Month & Meet Our Municipal Partners!

August is Black Business Month, a commemoration started in 2004 by John William Templeton and Frederick E. Jordan. An editor of the oldest Black newspaper in America and an engineering and construction management entrepreneur, respectively, Templeton and Jordan set out to demonstrate how vital Black-owned businesses are to economic growth. Don't miss a TEDx talk from Official Black Wall Street Found Mandy Bowman about the importance of creating and supporting Black businesses to build long-term, generational wealth.

Necessary Updates to the Cook County's Human Rights Ordinance.

At the July meeting of the Board of Commissioners, important updates to the Cook County Human Rights Ordinance were unanimously passed. These amendments provide protection for Cook County residents, especially community members seeking to exercise their right to protection related to their perceived status, practice, and expression of race, ethnicity, and caste, and seek to update outdated language and create a more all-encompassing definition of "unlawful discrimination."

Read DHRE’s Outreach Intern Danielle Lopez's summary of these important changes, and review the updated language.
