Spring Break is on the horizon and if you are heading somewhere warm with your family, I wish you a week of sun, fun and relaxation before you embark on that final push for the school year.
Summer will be here before your know it, and you will probably hear yourself saying, "Yikes summer is ahead and my teen will have lots of free time, maybe too much free time. How can I help her find the right balance this summer between free time and boredom?" Summer jobs, volunteering, and participating in camps and workshops are all great alternatives, but today let's talk about tips for landing a summer job!
Tip #1- Take Action-
Explore jobs sites such as Indeed and Snagajob. Both platforms offer search options and filters that allow you to narrow your search down to jobs with little or no experience and part-time hours.
Get the word out on social media that you are looking for summer employment.
Stop into local businesses where you might like to work and inquire about openings.
Tip #2- Create a Resume- Why? It captures the employer's attention, highlights your skills and accomplishments, and shows why you are a good candidate for the position. (See Monthly Teen Tool below for more on creating a resume).
Tip #3- Prepare for the Interview-
Dress professionally even for a job that will allow you to dress down.
Make sure you review the job description and be prepared to point to the skills you can bring to the job that make you a good fit.
Be on time for the interview. Being on time shows that you will be reliable.
Follow up after the interview with either a phone call or by stopping by.
Finally, don't get discouraged. Finding a summer job will probably take time and persistence. Take one small action every day.
