JWL's 7th Annual Touch-A-Truck is Rolling into Smithfield

Touch-A-Truck is a unique and interactive fundraiser that allows children to see, touch, and safely explore their favorite big trucks and heavy machinery, as well as to meet the personnel who protect, serve, and build Johnston County communities. Trucks on display will include emergency vehicles, tractors, machinery, construction equipment, farm equipment, service and delivery trucks, and more.

This event will also include food trucks, inflatables, special guests, face painting, and so much more!

There is fun for children and adults alike! Admission is FREE!
$5 wristbands will be available to purchase for inflatables, face painting, etc.

Proceeds from Touch-A-Truck will directly benefit Johnston County through the Junior Women's League of Smithfield's initiatives like the Johnston County Blessing Boxes and
Peanut Butter Buddies. Funds also support grants for other Johnston County non-profits to assist with the development of programs benefitting women and children. JWL has awarded over $135,000 in Community Impact Grants since its inception in January 2016.

JWL’s members will collect non-perishable food and personal care items to be placed in JWL’s Blessing Boxes throughout Johnston County. Look for the collection site under the Touch-A-Truck flag! Attendees can drop off items or monetary donations at the black 1934 rat rod featuring the JWL logo, sponsored by Teddy Bland, realtor with HomeTowne Realty Clayton East.

JWL Blessing Box Food Drive

Our members are revved up to be at JWL's 7th Annual Touch-A-Truck collecting non-perishable food and personal care items from TAT attendees, which will be placed in JWL’s ten Blessing Boxes throughout Johnston County. Suggested donations include non-perishable food items like canned goods (soups, vegetables, chili), boxed meals, canned proteins (tuna, chicken, Vienna sausage), pasta, vitamins, canned milk, peanut butter, cereal bars, granola bars, oatmeal, grits, baby food, bottled water, etc. Hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, soap, cleaning supplies, deodorant, q-tips, toilet paper, diapers, tissues and band aids are also great donations for the Blessing Boxes.

As always, the support of our community is greatly appreciated.

JWL in Action

We would like to thank Central Johnston County Rotary Club for having the Junior Women’s League of Smithfield as their guest speaker on Thursday, October 20.

Lindsay Wilson, VP of Public Relations, led an informative discussion focused on the league’s community impact through our many initiatives in recent years. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with a like-minded group of professionals who truly have a heart for service.

We have tremendous respect for the work they have done throughout our county and invite you to learn more about their organization.

Together, we can do great things!

On Friday, October 21, several JWL members had an "Escape to Paradise" as they volunteered at the annual Me Fine Gala - a charitable event our organization looks forward to participating in each year. Me Fine Foundation hosts this memorable event to continue funding the emotional support programs and financial assistance their organization delivers to families with children being cared for at Duke, UNC, and WakeMed Children's Hospitals. To learn more about Me Fine Foundation and how you can support their cause, please click here to visit their website.

Leadership Spotlight

October 2022

Each month we recognize a member, nominated by her peers, who has gone above and beyond in service and leadership within the league and her community. This amazing woman embodies JWL's mission and leads by example. Thank you for all that you do!

October General Member Meeting
Guest Speakers: Johnston County Emergency Services

On the third Thursday of each month, JWL members host our General Member Meeting (GMM) at the Country Club of Johnston County. This meeting not only allows for fellowship among our members, but also serves as an update on upcoming league initiatives and to discuss volunteer efforts in our county. Additionally, they are intended to be educational as it relates to Johnston County.

This month, we had two guest speakers who work in different capacities with emergency services throughout Johnston County.

Matthew Sutphin, Deputy Chief and Interim Fire Chief for the Town of Clayton, and Josh Holloman, Deputy Director Of Emergency Services for Johnston County, are both Johnston County natives and share a mutual passion for education as it relates to their areas of expertise.

Did you know? Johnston County has 23 fire departments (including volunteer stations) and they are projected to respond to over 31,000 calls this year. Of these fire calls, 75% are actually EMS calls and their average response time is 8-9 minutes.

Sutphin and Holloman conducted a live demonstration on how to properly use an AED and perform life saving chest compressions until help arrives. We were reminded of the importance of being CPR certified, among many other takeaways from their time with us.

We are thankful these two seasoned professionals scheduled time to share their evening with us and would like to send a thank you to all Johnston County Emergency Personnel for the important work they do each day.

Save the Date for Christmas Cheer

Because we've been good this year, Santa has offered to help JWL gift your loved ones with a memorable keepsake this Christmas. With each $5.00 donation, Santa will send a personalized letter from the North Pole to his biggest fans. Stayed tuned for more information coming from Santa and his special elves on Monday, November 7th via our website and social media!
