August in the Soulful Seeds Gardens |
We are in the full swing of the summer season. In addition to seeing a lot of produce coming out of the gardens, we are seeing a lot of development on the construction end. This month we have many people and teams to recognize for the progress we are making. Here are some highlights from August. Big News!! Washoe County and Tholl Fencing began the installation of our perimeter fence on Monday, August 22. This is exciting because we can begin our irrigation installation with Reno Green when the fence is complete. The fence install is just in time to plant our orchard and crop field cover crop. Thank you Washoe County. We harvested 70 pounds of fresh vegetables from the gardens in July. The food was delivered to the Sparks Community Food Pantry, St. Francis Assisi, CrossRoads, and our neighbors on the Our Place Campus. Volunteers from campus and residents of CrossRoads logged a total of 29 hours in the garden during the month of August. Our fundraising never ends and this month Carolyn Dragics and her husband, Mike, opened up their home to host a meet and greet reception. We were able to update members of the Arrowcreek neighborhood about the status of construction and vision for the future. Ultimately, we were able to raise funds that are supporting our continued garden development on the Our Place Campus. Thank you Carolyn, Mike, and everyone who attended!! Find us on the green at Jack Johnson's concert in Tahoe September 4 and September 5. We will be at the concert talking about our mission. We will have a special giveaway for people who visit us at the show. Be sure to stop by and say hi if you are there.

On August 24, Earstin received an early morning call from the Sparks Community Food Pantry. They were distributing food later in the morning and did not have any fresh produce to provide families. We harvested 33 pounds of greens, eggplant, and herbs to share with them. When we arrived, the pick-up lane was two cars wide. This is who we serve. Without our donation, these families would only have access to nonperishables for the next week. Imagine what we can do next summer when we have 2.5-acres under production. |

Thank You to Jay Rathmann of BJ's Nevada BBQ Company in Sparks |
Jay Rathmann is a local chef and business owner that frequently gives back to the community. In August, he went above and beyond returning to the garden for the second time this year with equipment to move rocks from our crop field. You can find Jay at his restaurant in Sparks and try his BBQ ribs, which earned him First Place at Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off 2022. Thank you, Jay, and congratulations on the win!! |
