Dear colleague,
Welcome to the nineteenth issue of Review — the ProtectED newsletter. We hope that this issue finds you safe and well, as restrictions change again, people go back to work and students get ready to start their first term of the new academic year.
On 27 August, we held our Fourth ProtectED Reflections webinar. "Student Financial Wellbeing – Good practice in enabling student financial resilience and dealing with gambling issues". Thank you to everyone who attended, and we hope you found the conversation with Vivi Friedgut and Megan Pengelly as interesting as we did. If you weren't able to attend, we're happy to say that the event was recorded — So you can watch the video of the discussion here.
We would like to invite you to join us at our next ProtectED Reflections event, Safeguarding the Student Experience: The Evolution of Campus Security – Towards effective institutional security (and the benefits during Covid-19), on Thursday 1 October 2020 at 2.00pm. This event will discuss the evolving role of university security services over recent years, and the shift in focus from physical security to a wider role in supporting student wellbeing and safeguarding the student experience. Professor Caroline Davey from ProtectED will be in conversation with Trevor Jones, Chair of the Association of University Chief Security Officers (AUCSO), Head of Security at the University of Salford and co-founder of ProtectED. Book your free ticket here.
At our previous ProtectED Reflections event in July, we discussed sexual misconduct policies with Georgina Calvert-Lee, Head of UK Practice and Senior Counsel at international law firm McAllister Olivarius. With university teaching now moving online, it would be easy to assume that the risk of staff sexual misconduct would be reduced. However, Dr Tiffany Page, co-founder of The 1752 Group has written an interesting article on "Sexual misconduct and online teaching environments". This explores the impact of teaching now predominately being conducted privately, in the intimate spaces of our homes. Dr Page asks, how do we conduct teaching and learning for students in ways that engage a professional relationship? You can read the article here.
We'd love to feature more articles on topics relating to university student and staff safety, security and wellbeing — and also how the current Covid-19 crisis is impacting the university landscape and student experience. If you have an idea for an article that you'd like to share — or an initiative, news item or event that ProtectED can support — please e-mail Lisa at l.ravenscroft@Protect-ED.org.
Remember to follow ProtectED on Twitter and LinkedIn so that you can hear about the articles, events and other items we have lined up!
As usual, we provide a round-up below of current news, events and initiatives around student safety, security and wellbeing. Please do contact us if you have something you'd like us to feature in the next ProtectED Review newsletter.
Best wishes,
