Sturgis Receives New Weather Siren January 2023 - Sturgis is the proud recipient of a new rotating tornado siren. The weather siren is located at the elevated water tank on S. Montgomery St. and is rated at 70 decibels oscillating at 360 degrees. The tornado siren will be automatically activated when Tornado Warnings are issued by the National Weather Service in Jackson. The siren is scheduled to be tested the first Tuesday of each month at noon. If weather does not permit it will be postponed to the next Tuesday. If this day is not favorable, it will be postponed to the next month. Funding for the siren was provided by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program that was applied for by Oktibbeha County Emergency Management Agency/E911. This is a competitive grant opportunity that is provided to all counties in Mississippi through the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency following a disaster. It does require a local match. The purchase of the siren was around $26,000 was provided at no cost to the Town thanks to the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors with the motion made by Supervisor Miller. In addition to the weather siren all citizens are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED. CodeRED is a FREE emergency notification service provided to all residents within Oktibbeha County that will notify you of emergency information through phone calls, text messages, emails and social media. The system will be used to keep you informed of local events that may immediately impact your safety. Please follow this link or text "OktibbehaAlerts" to 99411 to sign up for Code Red notifications. We thank Emergency Management / E911 Director, Kristen Campanella, the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors and Supervisor Bricklee Miller for helping secure our siren. |

Does Your House Have a Number? Help Emergency Responders and Your Mail Carrier Find You Have you ever wondered why your package is showing delivered, but it's not on your front porch or, heaven forbid, why it's taking an emergency responder so long to get to your house? Often the reason for delays or confusion is that your house or mailbox isn't clearly numbered resulting in the postal worker or emergency responder driving around wondering which drive way to go down. This month make a point to go out into your yard, look back at your house and look if you can see or read your house number. Better yet, check with the Golden Triangle Planning and Development District to see if your home or business has an E911 number. Often in emergencies seconds count. Do you want the responders driving around looking for your house when you or a loved one is experiencing a medial emergency or a fire has broken out? Often times when 911 is called and an E911 isn't on file with the home/business/location the description given over the radio sounds more like, "Look for the yellow house next to the church." Even though Sturgis is a relatively small town, we have a lot of churches and more than one house is painted yellow. Without an E911 number or your house number clearly visible from the road those valuable seconds could be the difference between a contained fire or a fully engulfed structure or a resuscitated individual versus one who succumbed to their ailment. Again, seconds count. Or maybe you've recently purchased an item online or an appliance from a home store to be delivered and you're sitting around waiting for your delivery only to be disappointed it hasn't made it yet. Postal workers and delivery drivers want to ensure they've left the parcels at the correct address. Don't make them guess which house is yours. Put your house number on your mailbox and on your house. Do your part. Ensure your home, business, and mailbox are appropriately labeled and visible. Go the extra step to ensure your property has an E911 address. Help these public servants help you. |

Upcoming Events at West Elementary School |
|
|
The spring semester at West Elementary is sure to be exciting! There are two upcoming events for our community to participate in with our students. Up first is the West Elementary Mardi Gras Parade. The parade will be held Friday, February 24 at 9:00am in front of the school. The parade is for those students who have exhibited outstanding behavior. We are asking our community members to bring a bag of beads and join us as we toss Mardi Gras beads to the kids. The next event is a community reading project. After we return from Spring Break, March 27, we will begin reading the book The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. We invite all community members to read along with the children. The school will announce the reading assignments as well as discussion questions that will be posted around town for us all to engage in the project together. Once we complete the book there will be a movie showing in the park Friday, April 21 at 5:00pm. All community members are invited to bring your blankets and lawn chairs to watch the movie! Students at West Elementary School will be provided a copy of the book. All other community members are encouraged to get your copy from our library, your favorite book store or online. |

Fun Fact: Only two people have ever swam the entire length of the 2,350-mile Mississippi River: Slovenian long-distance swimmer Martin Strel in 2002 and American former Navy SEAL Chris Ring in 2015. Strel swam for 68 days in a row; Ring took one day off a week, taking 181 days. Cite: https://parade.com/966564/parade/fun-facts/ |
