Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL)
by Otto Kriek
EBL is a viral disease in adult cattle. It's characterized by tumors of leukocytes and lymph nodes. Occurrence in a herd can be very high but only a few develop deadly lymphosarcoma (malignant cancer).
It spreads via contact with infected blood of a positive animal. Infection is transmitted iatrogenically (through human treatment), followed by a permanent antibody response and, less commonly, development of lymphocytosis
(excessive body lymphocytes) and lymphosarcoma. This type is rarely seen in cattle younger than 2 years of age and is more common in the 4-8 year olds.
The disease doesn't spread rapidly but in infected herds, there can be up to 80% sero-positive cows. In severely affected herds, mortality can be as high as 5%.
Lymphosarcoma is one of the 3 main causes of carcass rejection at abattoirs.
