At OutGrowth, we approach the concept of sustainability from multiple angles. Sustainability, by definition, is the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level. We believe that joy, success, growth, and well being are only sustainable if we build in the space to thoughtfully design our way forward. At OutGrowth, we are committed to that thoughtful design, and each experiential program that we create provides a carefully-crafted opportunity to design sustainable lives, professions, businesses and communities.

We are committed to helping students and professionals design sustainable lives and professions, by introducing them to new thinking and experiences that will drive them to build a life of purpose and impact.

We are dedicated to supporting the sustainability of community organizations and businesses, by connecting them to resources and know-how that can accelerate their work to the next level.

We are devoted to working with communities and organizations that support the sustainability of the planet and the well being of its inhabitants.

By creating key connections, within and among the people we serve, we believe that we create a new space of sustainable growth. As Sustainability is one of OutGrowth's key value pillars, we knew that we had to dedicate one of our 2021 issues to our approach to the concept. This month, we feature industry leaders who are empowering others to build sustainable life paths, and we offer resources on achieving sustainability, in the multiple ways we define it.

In January 2021, I taught a two-week intensive course called ‘Designing Your Sustainable Life.’ One of the course goals was to help students identify tangible actions they could implement in their own lives. If you’re thinking about what you can do to start designing a sustainable life, here are three tips, based on my teaching experience, to help you get started.

Wisdom is often revealed to us gradually by the long lens of accumulated experience, but sometimes it comes to us through a dramatic event that alters the course of our lives.

My father’s death in 2017 was such a deep, painful loss for me. It also changed my path, and was a jolt of wisdom that drives me every day.

"The Only Constant is Change"

by Rebecca Jacobs

'We can support growth beyond traditional limits by listening to others from a place of non-judgement. We are the only ones who can determine what we need in any given moment, so the best gift we can offer someone at a fork in their path is a safe space to be messy and navigate their growing pains without fear or shame.'

Rebecca has dedicated her life to creating meaningful change. Losing her parents at a young age taught her that the only constant in life is change – we can either resist it, or embrace it as an opportunity. Her authentic perspective of the nonprofit landscape, plus the champions she met along the way, inspired her to start Anika Works in 2019.

On Sustainability: Start at the Root

At OutGrowth, we create the space for people to have novel, inspiring experiences because we believe that in doing so, we help people to recognize their true selves and even realize their true purpose.

Why does this matter? Well, we believe that in order to build sustainable lives, businesses and communities, we first have to fully understand what drives us. What elements of our day light us up? What activities help us to experience 'flow?' What is the purpose and true mission behind our business, and why did we get started in the first place? What makes our communities tick, and what values do our communities embody?

By getting to the root of our individual and collection 'why,' we can begin to build systems and strategies that follow from our core values. Drifting from those core values is what leads to instability and prevents sustainability, at any level. Let's create lasting impact, lasting change and lasting joy. Let's build sustainable futures.

'Based on my experience establishing and growing My Streets Ireland, a social enterprise which provides accessible education and employment opportunities to people who are homeless, I propose to talk about how sensitively designed education programs can engage individuals and re-energize communities and empower them to take further action.'
