Introduction from the Coordinator

The CoFBAT project, “Advanced material solutions for safer and long-lasting high capacity cobalt free batteries for stationary storage applications” aims to develop next-generation solutions for stationary storage applications.

Nowadays energy storage applications are widely implemented in our daily life: in buildings to improve self-consumption; at grid-scale to increase peak-shaving and stability services in integration of variable renewables; in electric vehicle charging stations for automated guided vehicles, among others.

Energy storage is growing in Europe: residential applications involve 1400 M€/year, and electric vehicle storage systems are growing, currently estimated by 130 M€/year.

In line with this huge demand, the CoFBAT project addresses new materials and battery components aiming at:

  • Longer lifetime (up to 10,000 cycles)
  • Lower capital costs (down to 0.03 €/kWh/cycle)
  • Improved safety
  • More efficient recycling (>50%).

CoFBAT will strengthen the European competitiveness in advanced materials, manufacturing and the related battery value chain by developing a cobalt free solution and safe polymer electrolytes.

The CoFBAT Consortium gathers the whole battery value chain:

  • Materials (Torrecid, Topsoe, CEA,IFE, Solvay)
  • Battery manufacturing (Varta Microinnovation, Varta Storage)
  • Electrochemical characterization and life cycle assessment (Leitat, Cidetec, CIC Energigune, Free University of Brussels, Avesta Battery and Energy Engineering, Uppsala University)
  • Recycling (Mimitech)
  • Use cases (Bouygues, VDL)
  • Dissemination (EASE, Uniresearch).
