A Note from the Farm

3.26.19

Hello friends, old and new! Welcome to the very first Woodside Farms newsletter! We will be using this weekly newsletter to keep you up-to-date on all of the happenings here at Woodside Farms and Chickahominy Falls. From events and workshops to the weekly vegetable offerings, you'll hear it here first.  We have a very exciting season ahead, full of good food and community building, and we are so glad to have you along for the ride!

A quick introduction: I'm Meredith, Director of Events, Marketing, and Whatever-Else-Needs-to-be-Done here at Woodside. I'm married to your friendly  neighborhood farmer, Bryan.  You can read more about our story on the Woodside Farms website, here. If you have any questions about the farm or events, please hit reply to this email and I'd be happy to help!

After a very wet winter, things are really starting to come together at the farm. Sean Sheppard, a.k.a. The Backyard Farmer, and his crew spent many long days installing the orchard (hooray!). From my computer, I can see them adding mulch to the beds right now. In the orchard, we (will) have blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, figs, apples, pears, paw paws, persimmons, and peaches!

In the main field, in front of the barn, Bryan used our awesome new BCS (handheld tractor) to make the permanent raised beds (see photo below for aerial view). We've covered half of the beds with a rich mushroom compost, and the other beds will soon follow. This will make for some very happy and nutritious plants! As I type this, Bryan and Kara (your other friendly neighborhood farmer) are busy planting potatoes into those very beds!

The greenhouse is bursting at the seams, full of baby cabbages, kale, scallions, lavender, thyme, flowers, and so much more! As many of those seedlings are about ready to be planted, we will be starting volunteer days next week! Our first official Volunteer Day is Wednesday, April 3, from 9 am - noon. Bring a lunch and cool off in the barn after a morning of dirt therapy! All ages and abilities are welcome.

Please RSVP to this email, if you will be coming to Volunteer Day, so we are appropriately prepared. Please see the website for more details and what you'll want to bring.

Chickahominy Falls will be hosting a variety of fun and exciting events at the farm this season, including wellness workshops, Dinner in the Field, cooking classes, and more! You'll have the opportunity to come tour a model home and see what life at Chickahominy Falls is all about, while enjoying these awesome events! A schedule of events will be in the next newsletter. Stay tuned!
