ISUCRS

WINTER 2019 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear colleagues and friends,

2018 was a busy year for ISUCRS as we have made monumental steps forward and built a stronger society. Our main accomplishment, as you will read from the ISUCRS London Biennial Congress report below, was that we organized this successful meeting and had keynote speakers that are pioneers in coloproctology. It was so heartwarming to see how our members and congress participants interacted and showed appreciation for the extraordinary program put together by our congress lead, Dr. Joseph Nunoo-Mensah and the ISUCRS board.

With the ISUCRS board meeting and participation at its highest it has been in many years, I am very enthusiastic about our society’s future. With Dr. Philip Caushaj as the president during 2016-2018 and with new members on board, our society is growing even stronger. During the 2018-2020 presidency, with ISUCRS, the board agrees to focus not only in increasing membership but making our society the best it has ever been. We would like to be able to offer our members benefits and growth that comes through both collaboration and the sharing of our knowledge.

As many of you might have already received emails to activate your members-only access via our www.isucrs.org, you will see that we intend to increase access to information via this platform by:

  • Every quarter aiming to provide free educational information in the form of lectures, webinar conferences, live streaming videos, etc.
  • See sample lecture presentation for Video Cast 1st Quarter 2019
  • Having a blog site where you can collaborate with colleagues by sharing videos, or clinical cases and engage  in productive and beneficial discussions.
  • We intend to create the Young Colorectal Surgeon's Group and Journal club that offer recommended readings from selected articles from leading coloproctology sources every quarter (coming soon).

We would like to increase member participation and involvement in improving ISUCRS. Our ISUCRS board meets on a monthly basis. We welcome all of you to bring forth ideas and share any suggestions with us via email at admin@isucrs.org.  Your suggestions and input will be included for discussions in our monthly board meetings. As your president during the 2018-2020 term, I am convinced that it is only with your support and collaboration that our society will further gain prestige and continue to grow.

2018 ISUCRS BIENNIAL CONGRESS

London, UK

28th August - 1st September 2018

The ISUCRS held its 29th biennial meeting in London during August 29, 2018 to September 1, 2018. This was an historic meeting as it was the first meeting sponsored by the ISUCRS independent of any local national meeting; however, with strong support from the London based DDCRS course held annually and several national societies providing ancillary support and holding concurrent sessions: The Korean Society of Coloproctology, the Japanese Society of Coloproctology, National Conference of Association of Colon & Rectal Surgeons of India (ACRSICON) and the French Research Group of Rectal Cancer surgery (GRECCAR) Session. These societies offered the greatest support with their members attending. The synergy provided the catalyst for the successful meeting that occurred.

The meeting had 424 registrants from 48 countries (70 delegates from the UK, 50 from Korea, 45 from Japan and 45 from India). There were 107 podium presentations from guest speakers. In addition, there were 142 poster presentations and 8 selected video presentations. The Society honored luminaries in Colon and Rectal Surgery. The Society established the Angelita Gama-Habr Award honoring our Past President for her accomplishments and Dr. Gina Brown from the United Kingdom was the first recipient. Also honored during this meeting were Dr. Stanley Goldberg and Robert Beart (our Past President) by recognizing their extraordinary contributions to the specialty of Colon and Rectal Surgery and awarding them the status of Pioneer and Master of Coloproctology. The Society also recognized the substantial contribution to Colon and Rectal Surgery by our Past President Jae Gahb Park from South Korea establishing an award in his honor with Dr. Nam Kyu Kim from South Korea being the first recipient. Finally, in order to recognize the extraordinary contributions to the specialty of Colon and Rectal Surgery by Dr. Fumio Konishi, member of the executive Committee for many decades, the Society established the Fumio Konishi Award with Professor Kotaro Maeda from Japan being the first recipient.

The meeting of the general membership approved the recommendations of the nominating slate. In addition, the general membership approved the first modification of the Bylaws since the creation of our society in 1962. I would welcome your review of our new by-laws. These can be found on our webpage. In addition, the general membership unanimously approved waiving the 2 year wait restriction on implementation of the bylaws changes; thereby, allowing our President Dr. Hyung Ko Chun from South Korea to proceed with immediate implementation of these new bylaws. This was a historic general assembly meeting attended by 67 of our colleagues.

The Society was strongly supported by THD as our Platinum Sponsor. Medtronic was our Silver Sponsors. Bronze Sponsorship was Olympus, Bowa Lotus, Richard Wolf, Johnson & Johnson, Applied Medical and KCI. Other Sponsors were Wisepress medical bookshop, BK Medical and Intuitive. Without their contributions, this meeting would not have shined so brightly! THANK YOU!

The social program and the city of London provided an extraordinary venue for our colleagues from throughout the world. Congress Convener and Congress President, Joseph Nunoo-Mensah and his delightful wife, Alison, were the most gracious of hosts to the entire global colorectal community that gathered in London. The Bush House at King’s College was the back drop for the meeting with excellent academic facilities and also provided the locale for our Gala with the London skyline as a backdrop!

I would be remiss if I did not mention our gratitude for the extraordinary efforts of our Executive Director Ilda Boholli and her associate Tofu Salako for their excellent organizational skills. This meeting would not have been a success without the extraordinary efforts of Ilda and her colleagues.

The meeting in London will always be special for me. More importantly, the close collaboration and friendship of President Chun and President-elect Samalavicius leave me secure that the Society will continue to grow academically and with increasing membership. Dr. Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, in my humble opinion, did the lion’s share of the work to turn London into the success it was. I believe our Society needs to recognize his role directing the first ISUCRS stand-alone biennial meeting that was MORE profitable than any meeting we have previously had except for Korea.

It has been the greatest honor of my academic life to serve as President of the ISUCRS 2016 to 2018.

Respectfully submitted.
