Hi Everyone!

October has kicked off with some exciting developments as we focus on school lunches and how to request plant-based options.

We’re thrilled to share that Kamehameha School has been offering a plant-based vegan option to students for several years! In addition, we had a great meeting with Friends of Animals, an animal advocacy group, where we learned strategies to push for more plant-based options in schools. Check out some of their key tips below!

Fun Facts:

NYC serves Vegan Fridays to over 1 million students.

Los Angeles provides vegan options to 500,000 students.

States like Connecticut and Illinois are also offering vegan choices!

Advocacy Tips for School Lunches:

  1. 😊 Be Nice: Communicate kindly with School Districts, Food Service Directors, and Boards of Education.

  2. ➕ Propose a Simple Addition: Ask to add a plant-based vegan option without altering the existing menu.

  3. 💡 Highlight Nutritional Equivalence: Point out that the vegan option is just as nutritious and can be reimbursed like any other meal.

  4. 📋 Know the Current Menu: Review your school’s current menu and its nutritional value. (Find Hawaii school menus below.)

  5. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Get Kids and Parents Involved: Advocacy is stronger together!

  6. ⚖️ Push for Fairness, Respect, and Inclusion: Focus on student health, environmental concerns, and the needs of lactose-intolerant students.
