I think Mott’s Neighborhood Market, LLC (the team behind the effort to Save Mott’s Market) is a great contender for the civic pride award. A beloved market and staple of the community went up for sale last year. Rather than letting it be purchased by a developer, a grassroots group of neighbors mobilized to generate support and buy back the building that used to house Mott’s Market on 12th Street SE. They are now raising funds to renovate and reopen the corner market. I was really impressed by this group’s dedication to preserve a community gem.

Jerome Jeffries, 10th Street NE. An amazing guy who looks after his dad and all of us on the 300 block and adjoining streets. Helps neighbors with sweeping leaves, moving trash cans, keeps an eye on safety issues. He has become the glue that keeps our community strong

I warmly nominate Jerome Jeffries for the Brickie Award! Jerome is a the neighbor everyone wishes they had and our street, and neighborhood, are better because of him. He tirelessly looks after 10th St, NE, without our asking. He cheerfully looks out for our neighbors lending a hand when he can. And you can always find him with a warm smile and time to chat. Thank you, Jerome!

I would like to nominate Mott’s Neighborhood Market, LLC- the team behind the effort to Save Mott’s Market for the civic pride award. I miss having a corner market near me and believe that a group of neighbors working together to reopen a market definitely shows civic pride.

I grew up going to Mott’s Market every day on my way to and from school. It would have been such a sad loss for the neighborhood if it were not for the wonderful grassroots efforts by many neighbors to save it as a viable market.

I am nominating Mott’s Neighborhood Market LLC for the Civic Pride award. Mott’s Market has been part and parcel of the lives of children, parents and seniors since it opened in 1916. This neighborhood coalition seized the moment to acquire and revitalize their corner market when it was put up for sale earlier this year. The vision and effort of all of Mott’s neighbors exemplifies the value of good citizenship and neighborhood pride that the Brickie’s award represents.

I’ve lived by Mott’s Market fur over 25 years. I was bummed when it went up for sale and now thrilled that my neighbors have bought the building and it will live on! Such a special place and an institution in this neighborhood!

Jerome Jeffries for Neighbor award – (Jerome lives on 10th street NE). Jerome sweeps the streets, brings everyone’s trashcan in and out and organizes leaf collections without anyone asking him to – He does these and so many other things out of the goodness of his heart! He always smiles at everyone and greets neighbors with a friendly hello. Born and raised in DC Ward 6. He fully deserves this award.

I’d like to nominate Jerome Jeffries, who is the very embodiment of neighborliness. Jerome, who lives at 323 10th St NE, not only looks out for the collective—carrying trash and recycling to and from the street, sweeping the sidewalks—but also looks out for us individually. When my car was burglarized, Jerome came to my door to give me the news since I don’t drive daily and might have missed it. I know other neighbors who’ve been alerted by Jerome that their car lights were on. If a car battery needs a jump, Jerome will be there. If an elderly neighbor is having a birthday, Jerome spreads the word. And anytime I walk out and see my front porch remarkably cleared of leaves, I know who to thank. Jerome has done all of this and more selflessly and with a smile. He’s an incredible neighbor, and he deserves recognition for his warm and generous neighborliness.

We were sorely disappointed when we found out that Mott’s Market was suddenly closing (particularly my 11 year old who had developed the habit of going there on his own after school for a snack on the way home). At that time, I couldn’t have imagined how a group of neighbors could work together to turn lemons into lemonade. Any time we have a need for some new skill or expertise we only need to send out an email to the group and someone volunteers to do what needs getting done or to find someone who is able to help. As a result I think a lot of us are finding that we are turning neighbors into friends and ensuring our neighborhood continues to have the anchoring presence of our 100 year old neighborhood market. Accordingly, I want to nominate the Mott’s Market project for the Civic Pride Award.

Corner stores contribute to the livability and walkability of our Capitol Hill neighborhood. But those local markets have been having a tough time over the last year or two, with several of them closing. That’s all the more reason to recognize the work that neighbors around 12th Street and Independence Avenue have been doing to preserve their local market, Mott’s Market. A small grocery store has been running in that location for over 100 years. Dozens of community residents have come together to raise funds to buy back that building, renovate the property, and find another business operator to continue running that local food business. I think Mott’s Neighborhood Market, LLC, the team behind the effort to save that community resource, is worthy of a Brickie Award. This group has shown how you can be inclusive in your urban design and property acquisition such that you honor a legacy while continuing to make progress

Delighted with the Save Mott’s Market team and would like to nominate them for the civic pride award. I don’t live very close but I think their effort to reopen the market and use it is new ways is exactly what makes Capitol Hill so special and I look forward to visiting it once it is open.

My nomination for the Ward 6 Brickie Civic Pride Award unequivocally goes to Mott’s Neighborhood Market. It has been so inspiring to watch our Ward 6 neighbors come together to not only successfully purchase the property, but put in the hard work to collect feedback from the community on how to revitalize the building so that it can serve the next generation of neighbors. In my time volunteering with the organization, I heard something else magical; #SaveMottsMarket gave individuals an opportunity to connect with others. On multiple accounts over the last few months I heard stories about neighbors reconnecting with their community for the first time since the Covid lockdowns and others that simply needed help shaking off the sense of feeling alone. Sometimes all it takes is for a friendly neighbor to knock on your door asking about saving a corner market… but that simple act seems to have gone a long way for our community. From the big efforts, to the small, Mott’s Neighborhood Market exemplifies civic pride.
